    Etymology

    [edit]

From Middle Low German Îslant, a calque of Old Norse Ísland (“Iceland”), from íss (“ice”) +‎ land (“land”). The High-Germanized form Eisland did not establish itself; that with I- was reinforced by Danish Island. Compare the same in Grönland.

    Usage notes

    [edit]

Perhaps by error LĒL lists this term as type 127 – vȯņ which has consonant shift in genitive (vȯn) a pattern that is not possible for this term. Like for Kanād the most regular type (135 – āigast) is given in this entry.

The location of Iceland in Europe.
The coat of arms of Iceland.

    Etymology

    [edit]

Inherited from Old Norse Ísland, from íss (“ice”) +‎ land (“land, country”), literally “ice land”. The name probably refers to drift ice seen by early seafarers off the northern parts of the island.

Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Island, Danish Island, Swedish Island, Faroese Ísland and Icelandic Ísland (“Iceland”). English Iceland is a calque of the Old Norse name.

    Pronunciation

    [edit]
    • IPA(key): /¹ˈiːs.lan/, [ˈìːs.lǎn]
    • Rhymes: -iːslan
    • Hyphenation: Is‧land

    Proper noun

    Island

    1. Iceland; an island of Europe, in the northern Atlantic Ocean, south of the Arctic Circle.
Øya Island ligger i Nord-Atlanteren. ― The island of Iceland lies in the North Atlantic Ocean.
      • 2026 January 6, Fredrik Lyngås Pedersen, “Island”, in Lille norske leksikon‎[3]:
Island er Europas nest største øy etter Storbritannia.
Iceland is Europe’s second-largest island after Great Britain.
    2. Iceland; a country in Europe, occupying the island of the same name, with Reykjavík as its capital.
Reykjavík er hovedstaden på Island. ― Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland.
      • 2021 September 16, “Island”, in FN-sambandet‎[4]:
Island er en øyrepublikk i Nord-Europa.
Iceland is an island republic in Northern Europe.

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • Island denotes both the island and the sovereign state.
    • In both senses, på Island is strongly recommended over i Island. The use of på has an unbroken Norwegian tradition rooted in common Old Norse usage.
    • Both the Norwegian short name and the official Norwegian name of the state are simply Island.
