Etymology

edit

From Bosnia (“Bosnia”) +‎ Hercegovina (“Herzegovina”), with the hyphen joining two coordinate elements and functioning like og (“and”), literally “Bosnia and Herzegovina”.

The first element, Bosnia, is an international form ultimately based on Serbo-Croatian Bȍsna, the name of the river after which the historical region was named. The deeper origin of the river name is uncertain. The pronunciation with [ɔ] instead of expected [ʊ] is rather learned.

The second element, Hercegovina, derives from Serbo-Croatian Hèrcegovina, from hèrceg (“duke”) +‎ -ov (“possessive suffix”) +‎ -ina (“suffix used in place names”), literally “duke's land”. The region was named for the territory of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, who adopted the title hèrceg in 1448. The title derives from Hungarian herceg (“duke”), ultimately from Middle High German herzog (“duke”).

Compare Danish Bosnien-Hercegovina, Faroese Bosnia-Hersegovina, Icelandic Bosnía og Hersegóvína, Swedish Bosnien och Hercegovina, German Bosnien und Herzegowina and Serbo-Croatian Bȍsna i Hèrcegovina.
