Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Kȍsovo, originally an ellipsis of Serbo-Croatian Kosovo polje (“Blackbird Field”). The element Kosovo is the neuter singular of a possessive adjective formed from kos (“blackbird”) with the possessive suffix -ov, agreeing with polje (“field”). The name therefore literally means “blackbird's field”, or more idiomatically “field of blackbirds”.

Compare the parallel borrowings Danish Kosovo, Swedish Kosovo, German Kosovo, Dutch Kosovo, Finnish Kosovo and Czech Kosovo.

Pronunciation

Proper noun

[edit]

Kosovo

  1. Kosovo; a country in the Balkans, Europe, with Pristina as its capital.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The official long-form name is Republikken Kosovo (“the Republic of Kosovo”).
  • Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. Norway recognizes Kosovo as an independent country, while Serbia considers it part of Serbia; its international recognition is not universal.
