Alternative forms

[edit]
  • Luxemburg (equally standard spelling for the country and its capital)

Etymology

[edit]

Internationalism, based on French Luxembourg and German Luxemburg. Both forms ultimately continue Middle High German Luccelemburc, from Old High German Lucilinburhuc, first recorded in a Latin deed from 963 and traditionally interpreted as “little castle”, from luzil (“little”) and burg (“castle, fortress”).

The name originally referred to the castle and the settlement that developed around it, and was later extended to the surrounding territory. The modern country, its capital, the Belgian province and the canton ultimately derive their names from this place-name.

Parallel international adaptations include Danish Luxembourg, Swedish Luxemburg, German Luxemburg, French Luxembourg, Dutch Luxemburg and Icelandic Lúxemborg (“Luxembourg”).
