The approximate division between the traditional regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Etymology

[edit]

Internationalism, based on New Latin Bosnia, ultimately from Serbo-Croatian Bȍsna, the name of the historical region. The region is named after the river Bȍsna. The deeper origin of the river name is uncertain; a pre-Slavic origin has traditionally been proposed, while a Slavic origin has also been argued.

Compare Danish Bosnien, Swedish Bosnien, German Bosnien, Dutch Bosnië, French Bosnie and English Bosnia.

  2. (informal, by ellipsis) Bosnia-Hercegovina; the country as a whole
    • 2026 July 2, Eirik Sørenmo Påsche, “Rødt kort og frisparkperle da USA sendte Bosnia hjem fra VM”, in VG‎[3]:
Jeg beklager til folket i Bosnia og det bosniske fotballandslaget.
I apologize to the people of Bosnia and the Bosnian national football team.
