The Igalia consulting firm working with Valve is aiming to improve the Firefox web browsing experience when running on the Steam Deck handheld Linux-powered device.

Eri Pazos Pérez of Igalia presented on Monday at XDC 2026 about the ongoing efforts to create a more seamless experience using Mozilla Firefox on Valve's Steam Deck. The effort is underway to transition Firefox on the Steam Deck to using Wayland natively under the Gamescope compositor via the wl_compositor protocol. The intent is on overcoming limitations of the Firefox X11 implementation.

Igalia's work on enhancing Firefox for the Steam Deck has involved improvements/fixes to the gamepad input, fullscreen handling, stuttering while touch scrolling, notification handling, and HDR video support.

Igalia is working still on upstreaming some Gamescope compositor patches, notification handling, replacing udev with inputfd, and finishing the HDR support and session management.

Those curious about this effort can see Eri's PDF slide deck and the XDC recording embedded above.
