MESA
The Mesa 3D driver stack has functioned well over the years without a formal governance model and just relying on an informal consensus approach for big changes. But on some occasions this informal handling has been less than ideal so upstream Mesa developers are now looking at establishing a formal governance model.

In citing burn-out by developers and Mesa developers sometimes not having the mental bandwidth for fighting back against proposed changes, a council is being looked at to govern Mesa development. This would principally be focused on conflict-resolution as opposed to driving decision making proactively.

Mesa development practices would be largely unchanged and would continue to be consensus-based and only calling upon the Mesa council should there not be a consensus reached or other issues. Among the topics that would likely get punted to the Mesa council is on adding/removing new drivers, legacy software support and the removal of old drivers, and any other contentious features.

Mesa council conclusion

No concrete proposal for this Mesa council has been submitted yet as it was just brought up last week at XDC 2026 in Toronto. But for those wishing to learn more about these tentative Mesa plans can see this slide deck and the XDC presentation embedded below.
