In his article, Daniel Sharp developed a relational egalitarian argument against immigration restrictions. In his view, while affluent states’ immigration restrictions against disadvantaged immigrants are morally objectionable because they are an exercise of unequal power, similar restrictions against those from affluent states are not. In this paper, I challenge Sharp’s restrictive treatment of who can make a complaint against immigration restrictions based on relational equality. First, I outline and critically examine Sharp’s argument and argue that his relational egalitarian argument should (...)

In the following article, I compare ancient cosmopolitanism with Kant’s cosmopolitanism. I argue that we have to distinguish between different approach- es in antiquity, not all of which are suitable for a comparison with Kant. In antiq- uity, we can distinguish at least three different theories of cosmopolitanism, one that rejects territorially limited states as unnatural conventions, a second that de- scribes only the wise as cosmopolitans, and finally a third for which belonging to the human species is already sufficient (...)

The present war in Ukraine has seen millions of women flee as refugees, while martial law forbids adult men under 60 from leaving the country. According to various reports, many and perhaps most women Ukrainian refugees are breaking romantic ties with the men they leave behind, building new lives with men in their countries of refuge, and/or planning never to return. I avoid any comment about the morality of these events and instead take up the general question of whether women (...)

This paper is about the following questions: how, exactly, do the historical Confucian philosophers account for the ethical value of cosmopolitan care? More specifically, how do Mengzi (Mencius) and later Mengzi-inspired Confucian philosophers conceive of the ethical basis for caring about non-citizen strangers? These questions are both important in their own right and also offer a way of testing the limits of the widespread characterization of Confucian ethics as relational or role-based. I explore two possibilities in detail. The first is (...)

By bringing together diverse traditions of thinking about justice that contrasts East Asian and Western thinkers’ traditions avoids the shortcomings of narrow and one-sided conceptualisations of global justice. A range of contributors from East Asia, Europe, and the US who are conversant with both Western and East Asian philosophical traditions provide a rich engagement with (...)

Theories of justice and intellectual property are vast topics in their own right. The contributions to this volume examine how they relate. How do our justifications for protecting intellectual property fare from an ethical perspective? Any attempt to tackle this question in a relatively short chapter like this one will have to be restricted in scope. My claims are limited in four ways. First, we should expect a British subject to love France more than Great Britain because France has a larger population than Great Britain. Second, we should expect a British subject to love France more than a far-away country such as China given that the British subject is more familiar with the French than with the Chinese people.
