Wikidata Queries for Greek and Latin Philology

Outline

The goal of this session is to introduce the Wikidata knowledge base and its use for the study of the Graeco-Roman World. After an introduction, the session will focus on examples to extract information from Wikidata and structure Wikidata items about Ancient Greek and Latin entities. The session will be structured in this way:

Exercise

  • Exercise 1: write a query in the Wikidata Query Service listing all the persons speaking ancient Greek and having a LAGL author ID; for each item, the results should display the QID, the English label if present, the Ancient Greek label if present, and the LAGL ID.
  • Exercise 2: write a query in the Wikidata Query Service listing all the authors of the articles of the Paulys Realencyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft regarding a person with occupation author (Q482980) or one of its recursive subclasses; for each item, the results should display the QID of the author, the German label of the author if present, the QID of the article, the German label of the article, the QID of the subject of the article, the English label of the subject of the article if present. Write also a second query counting the number of distinct articles written by each author and order the results by decreasing number of articles.
