| Robot and gadget jobs | I'm planning to add 2k IDs to Swedish bathing places based on a curated and updated dataset with reviews using review score (P444) and number of reviews/ratings (P7887) and it would be nice to be able to use this id as source. |

Instruction: The place id are used in the Googles Places API and can be looked up using the Place ID finder. Demo keys are available if API access is needed.
Motivation
[edit]This is needed to link to places in google maps and fetch data on reviews more easily. I built a script in Python to fetch reviews and it could easily be turned into a bot that updates Wikidata with reviews just like BorkedBot does for Youtube channel followers, etc.
- Note
I couldn't get the links in the examples to work, feel free to fix if you know how :).--So9q (talk) 09:07, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

Question Could you explain how this property differs from Google Maps Customer ID (P3749)? JhowieNitnek (talk) 06:08, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I think each place in Google Places has both a numeric CID and a Place ID (this property). The CID is more internal, whereas the Place ID is designed for use in Google's APIs. Yirba (talk) 10:49, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- Okay thank you, I will
Support because I think they both are useful ID's JhowieNitnek (talk) 11:19, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

Question Are you planning to use this as an external identifier (as stated) or as a reference (your "id as source"?) As an external identifier, I would support this, but I question to usefulness of it as a reference over a reference URL with archived webpages as a backup for verifiability. --GA Kevin (talk) 13:13, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- It's just an identifier. So9q (talk) 16:25, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

Question the current formatter URL (https://www.google.com/maps/place/?q=place_id:%s) does not work on mobile devices. Are there any other formatter URLs that work across all devices? —Aebion (talk) 14:07, 10 July 2026 (UTC)- I don't know any others that do not require authentication. I found https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/places/web-service/place-details?apix_params=%7B%22name%22%3A%22places%2F$1%22%2C%22fields%22%3A%22*%22%7D#try_it which requires a demo key or google account. So9q (talk) 15:29, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Aebion, @So9q: How about
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=$1&query_place_id=$1? Example: public beach Nossenbadet (Q106708443) → https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=ChIJb2T6SFnLWUYRPdwTLQhu9CE&query_place_id=ChIJb2T6SFnLWUYRPdwTLQhu9CE Yirba (talk) 17:04, 10 July 2026 (UTC)- Worked for me in firefox mobile. It asked if I wanted to open in google maps app and I clicked no. So9q (talk) 21:31, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- @User:Yirba your URL works for me too, Safari on iOS --Aebion (talk) 04:24, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- This simplified version: https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=wd&query_place_id=$1 also works for me -> https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=wd&query_place_id=ChIJb2T6SFnLWUYRPdwTLQhu9CE So9q (talk) 12:50, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- The reason I suggested using
&query=$1is that if you put&query=wd, Google will try to find a place called "wd" in case the Place ID is invalid. It ends up bringing back unrelated businesses near me that happen to have names including "WD". If you use&query=$1, you should instead get a "no results found" message. Yirba (talk) 14:02, 12 July 2026 (UTC)- Oh, nice, then lets use your formatter url :) So9q (talk) 09:59, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

- This has been proposed before, but the big problem is Google only guarantee its stability for 12 months. See https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/places/web-service/place-id which says "Because Place IDs may change due to updates on the Google Maps database, Google recommends refreshing place IDs if they are more than 12 months old. You can refresh Place IDs at no charge by making a Place Details request, specifying only the place ID field in the fields parameter." I think this makes it unsuitable for us, so
Oppose. Vicarage (talk) 19:02, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- Is Google Maps Customer ID (P3749) more stable? Yirba (talk) 20:49, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- Apparently yes, but its less useful. BTW Property_talk:P3749 has more about my experiments with placeid a couple of years back. Vicarage (talk) 21:17, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. That's interesting. I got a database from a few years back with 3k place ids. A few we gone when I updated the reviews by scraping the public endpoints. That was my main reason for suggesting this property. I didn't know the relationship with the CID nor that the Place ids are more volatile. I'll use CID instead. I'm setting this proposal as retracted. So9q (talk) 04:15, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
