Add topicHi, the OSM Name Suggestion Index ID (P8253) you entered for Octopus Energy (Q63242134) actually refers to Octopus Investments (Q86685332). Paranoid25 (talk) 10:26, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for that catch! It was in a warnings file for the NSI and it does on rare occasions have cases like this. I'll correct this sometime today as time permits. --GA Kevin (talk) 18:12, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
Property proposals: NBA Game ID and MLB Game ID
[edit]Hi! You attempted to propose new properties called NBA Game ID and MLB Game ID. However, the proposals were not created properly (they need to be created as new subpages of Wikidata:Property proposal) so I removed your attempts from Wikidata:Property proposal/Sports, though you can still access them at Special:PermanentLink/2496972142. Do feel free to create them properly, and let me know if you need help doing that. --Yirba (talk) 19:31, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks @Yirba! I'll take a look! --GA Kevin (talk) 19:41, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
Mentee Discussions
[edit]Hello Kevin. I am new to Wikidata. I created an item that was deleted as “Recreation of earlier deleted item”. I already contacted the administrator who deleted it to ask for guidance, and I will wait for her response before doing anything else.
Depending on what she says, I may need help understanding whether it is possible to request an undeletion review, or whether the sources are not enough for Wikidata notability. I will not recreate the item again. Thank you. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rufito14 (talk • contribs) at 02:26, 6 July 2026 (UTC).
- Hey @Rufito14! Thanks for joining Wikidata! I see you've already been engaging with that admin, so I will stand behind what they stated there, but generally statements in Wikidata should be supported by a reliable third-party source whenever possible and not include any hint of self-promotion or advertising references. Thanks again for joining! --GA Kevin (talk) 15:22, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
Question from Innove Immo (13:24, 7 July 2026)
[edit]Bonjour, j'ai reçu un mail de votre part mais je n'ai rien compris. pouvez vous m'aider? --Innove Immo (talk) 13:24, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- It was likely an automated email informing you about the request for deletion of Q140447569 since it violates WD:SELF. -- GA Kevin (talk) 16:44, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
hello, how do i add details about myself here? birth, lineage etc? and can i claim an entry that is actually me on here? --VGCook (talk) 13:55, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- You generally do not add information about yourself on Wikidata, per WD:SELF, unless an item is alreadhy created and you can correct the record with a third-party source. If you mean on your user page, you click your name at the top of the page, and create your userpage to add Wiki-related information (not advertisements) to. -- GA Kevin (talk) 16:45, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- thanks, as clear as mud for a first time user! ill get the hang of it im sure. thankyou VGCook (talk) 20:49, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
On nominating items for deletion
[edit]Hi, I see you are active in nominating items for deletion, thank you for your volunteer work in patrol. However, I saw that some users started complained that WD:SELF is not a policy in Wikidata. They are correct, indeed it is not a policy but a widespread community practice, emphasizing on neutrality, that written into an widely read and agreed essay. They might be a good start to scrutinize an item, the quality of references attached, or the state of external record. As it is believed that when people write about themselves, they are more often than not, not neutral.
In my experience, it is better to use another more "strict" reasons under WD:N, e.g. "sources only relied on paid advertorial, limited sources from independent notable journalistic outlets", or "self promotion of non notable subject, due to lack of cited publications in Google Scholar (< 5)", etc. Thank you. Yamato Shiya • (Hello!) 09:00, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hey @Yamato Shiya! Thanks for the knowledge share, I will take that moving forward! Much of these were unsourced blatant conflicts of interest so I would doubt it passes WD:N, but will reference specifically going forward. -- GA Kevin (talk) 13:16, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
Hi Kevin,
I just created/expanded four related Wikidata items for a client (an eye clinic in Hamburg, Germany) and wanted to be transparent about it, since I'm doing this on behalf of a client.
Paid-editing disclosure: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Klx-bw
Items involved: - Q133078375 (existing GND stub, expanded) - Q140469965 (new) - Q140469931 (new, organization) - Q140470836 (new, book)
If you have a moment to take a look and let me know whether this looks right, or if there's anything I should be doing differently, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks! Bernhard --Klx-bw (talk) 09:02, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hey @Klx-bw, thanks for reaching out! I'll take a look here shortly! In the meantime, it may be useful to use the paid editing template on your user page with your details, it's:
{{PaidContributions|employer=[Your employer here]|since=[year]|end=[year, if applicable]}}, inclusive of the opening/closing {{}}. -- GA Kevin (talk) 15:08, 9 July 2026 (UTC)- Thanks for the tip, Kevin! I've added the
| This user is doing paid contributions to Wikidata. Please note that this does not mean that the user is speaking for their employer, nor does it free from the obligation to add sources to statements. No employer has been specified. Wikimedia and Wikidata policies require the publication of employer, client and affiliation for paid contributions. |
template to my user page alongside the existing disclosure text that names the specific client. Appreciate you taking the time to look at this. Klx-bw (talk) 06:18, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you to being my mentor. My name is Peter and I am located in Frankfurt/Germany. --PeterDunstonShaw (talk) 14:32, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

notability policy
[edit]All items require a reputable, independent source that was not created by the same person/organisation. Please note that independent sources are required when writing about OpenStreetMap citing OpenStreetMap itself as a source is not permitted. Furthermore, it does not make sense to create entries for individual speeches, since you can usually back them up with an independent source. WikiBayer (talk) 17:38, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry, is there a particular item in question of notability? -- GA Kevin (talk) 18:02, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiBayer please refrain from deleting SOTM US entries until community discussion has happened. Thank you! -- GA Kevin (talk) 18:12, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiBayer: Can you refer to the Wikidata policy that requires each item to have a reputable, independent source? I agree that it would be ideal, but I must have missed the project-wide discussion that introduced it as a hard requirement. If this policy is in effect, we may need to update some OpenStreetMap documentation about how to contribute to Wikidata. Or are you referring to notability criterion 2, which is one of three criteria for achieving notability? (I'm not contesting the deletion of the individual talk items at this time, since only one of them was ever uploaded to Commons.) Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:16, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
hai mentor. just registered. I'd like to help too. what should i do first? --Yukzanali (talk) 06:08, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Yukzanali! Welcome to Wikidata, take a look around to get a feel for how we model things. Once you feel some comfort, take a look at something you know well and can list a third-party source for, and see if it can be improved! Happy editing! --GA Kevin (talk) 19:11, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
Question from JurisTchetou (13:05, 17 July 2026)
[edit]C'est quoi le wikidata --JurisTchetou (talk) 13:05, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
Hello! When I published my user page, I received a warning from the anti-spam filter about promotional content. Could you please tell me what rules apply to user pages and how to avoid violating them? --BossBotAI (talk) 18:36, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
- It is likely coming from the AI term in your message / username. Wikidata is typically concerned with human-curated entries so we have some filter to flag for possible promotional content. See also WD:SELF. --GA Kevin (talk) 19:13, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you, Kevin. That makes sense. I’m still trying to understand how I can appropriately mention my product while following Wikidata’s rules. I want to contribute in a way that complies with the project’s guidelines. Thank you for the clarification! ~2026-42291-43 (talk) 19:21, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
Hi Kevin, I am new to Wikidata and associated with Kaleidr, a spatial intelligence software company. I want to contribute accurately and transparently without using Wikidata for promotion.
Before I create or expand an item for the company, could you help me confirm:
1. whether Kaleidr currently meets Wikidata’s inclusion criteria; 2. which independent or authoritative sources are appropriate; 3. which properties are suitable for a software company and its products; and 4. how I should disclose my affiliation and avoid conflict-of-interest concerns?
I would appreciate guidance before making further edits. --Kaleidr (talk) 04:18, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- Notability will come from independent, third-party sources either nationally recognized, local, or trade count so long as they are not paid advertisements / placements. As far as properties, think of the large players in the area you're looking to add, take a look at their Wikidata pages and see which properties they use to give you some inspiration. Make sure statements carry references! Happy editing! --GA Kevin (talk) 19:15, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
Question from Dope Lethabza Rsa (18:14, 22 July 2026)
[edit]Hello mind you help me write my Artist Biograpghy --Dope Lethabza Rsa (talk) 18:14, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi there! Wikidata is not typically the place for a biography, but perhaps you mean your user page, in which case a quick blurb of your interests and userboxes would be more than 99% of users! See for some examples. --GA Kevin (talk) 19:19, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
Hi, I work for Uniepoint, an Italian digital platform run by Mainforce (an accredited centre of the Multiversity group) that supports students enrolled in the online universities Pegaso, Mercatorum and San Raffaele. I would like to know whether an item about it would meet the notability guidelines, given that our main sources today are our own website and a partner association's page. I have a clear conflict of interest and I prefer to ask before creating anything. Thank you. --Uniepoint (talk) 21:39, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
