“Youth” should cement her status as TV’s premier chronicler of the upper-middle-class, middle-aged female experience.

The escapades fly along at a tidy 30 minutes an episode, sometimes filthy, sometimes cringe, but as with Catastrophe, always ringing truthful.

Her take on the fallacy of the empty nest is fresh. .... Horgan also writes female raunchy outrageously. This is not your mother’s menopause.

Youth often feels both funnier and realer for recognizing how self-involved Alex can be. But its shrewdest, most quietly poignant insight is that being old enough to know better does not, in fact, always mean you act better.

“Youth” doesn’t reach the highs of Horgan’s “Catastrophe,” but it possesses her familiar sense of humor and animosity toward a world eager to define a woman’s place in it.

Youth is missing the pathos of Catastrophe or the nastiness of Motherland. It feels a bit like a big American streaming service has sanded down the edges of her writing, leaving it as warm and human as ever but missing that real spark.

To be fair I only got through part of episode 2 then decided this show isn't for me. Not sure why a show decides it needs to be so overtly 'frank' about adult situations. Not that I'm a prude but by putting it all in the open the humor is lost. I guess this used to be called 'crude' ? Outside that I am never entertained by having to watch young adults/teens behave terribly. There may be validity to it - but it isn't fun to watch. We've all been there so writing about it isn't clever or daring. Much like 'crude' humor - young adult angst just doesn't need to be shoved in our faces... we've all lived through it and we've all been involved in many adult situations... rubbing our noses in it is lazy.

YOUTH shows a lot of potential and its lead is clearly talented. That said, it lumber along in the first episode and needs some more drive. What does she want, and what is she trying to say? I suppose we don’t need to know fully what she’s trying to say, but at least the question has to be put forth as to what is it she wants that’s the nature of story talent.
