Small Prophets

Shows [Small Prophets creator Mackenzie] Crook (on writing, directing, and acting duties) at the top of his game.

What impresses most in the early episodes is that understated sense of the ordinary, leavened by inventive humour that constantly prickles this show’s skin.

Mackenzie Crook has taken everything that made Detectorists quietly remarkable — its slow pacing, eccentricity, gentle humor and human warmth — and added a fantastical layer that surprises without undermining the emotional core. Pierce Quigley balances deadpan delivery with a sweetness, making Michael someone you ultimately root for.

It’s meditative, melancholy, sweet and funny.

Small Prophets spends its energy on being endearing and funny, and comes by its quirks organically, which makes it an engaging watch.

Admittedly, some components jar – a cackling colleague at the DIY store feels misplaced, and the final instalment of the six-part series takes an unwanted detour into horror. However, Quigley is wonderful; a character in whose company one would happily while away the hours.

If the show’s magical realism gives you pause, don’t be put off: you’ll be rewarded with something funny, strange, and surprisingly accessible.
