While not as bursting with ideas as Lindelof’s best work or as visually stunning as “True Detective’s” most memorable scenes, “Lanterns” is an exciting synthesis of its creators’ strengths.

Lanterns is a tough show to fit into any genre. It's also a deeply compelling, unpredictable series regardless of what you want to call it.

Fantastic show! Incredible acting and an amazing take on a superhero detective mystery. People always find something to complain about. Last time I checked everyone was sick of the basic MCU style superhero formula. Now, we get something different and people are complaining about how there is not enough basic superhero moments in the show. Come on guys l. If this show is not for you I understand, but let’s still appreciate a fantastic DC show when we get one. The DCU is not dead and it has had the best start of any modern franchise. If you want classic green lantern in space stories I’m sure they are coming be patient and grow up.

“Lanterns” isn’t totally free of cliches, which is practically impossible for sci-fi and crime stories anyway, so many have been told over the years, and to some degree that’s just what we come for. But the series is fresh enough in its details and execution, and strong enough in its writing, and so well performed, that it feels quite original.

“Lanterns” isn’t for kids, but adds an edge that kept me on my seat throughout the seven episodes HBO made available. Pierre and Chandler play off each other with gusto and finesse.

With flashbacks and flash-forwards, surprisingly complex characters, gnarly relationships, astute racial politics and, yes, a load of references to the comics and cartoon series, “Lanterns” weaves an ever-richer tapestry of intriguing elements.

New York Magazine (Vulture)
It is a Frankenstein of a story, with many parts that struggle to operate as one unified whole. Lanterns is best when it embraces its odd awkwardness, less beholden to its prior DNA and attempting to become wholly itself.

San Francisco Chronicle
Its central mystery takes far too long to gather momentum or embrace the star-spanning possibilities of the mythos. For a story built around a weapon capable of creating anything its wearer can imagine, “Lanterns” feels oddly constrained in what Green Lantern can be.

This show was okay. I do like the more grounded version of the characters, but it was also a show I wanted a lot more out of. Not necessarily action, but something to give it a bit more of an interest. Overall it’s strong enough for a season 2, but maybe taking it to a new frontier will help give the show its full potential.

This feels like a CW super show like Titans or Gifted. The writing is adolescent and amateurish, and never before have I seen a more convincing example proving that longer only equals longer, not better. These 8 episodes could have been told in two.

Did we see the same show here? Are people this freaking starved? ITS BASICALLY BATTLESTAR GALACTICA BUT WITH ALIENS. - Doesn't even follow Green Lantern's own logic for how his powers work. - For some reason Hal Jordan just tells everyone he's Green Lantern (I am Iron Man logic) - Apparently you don't need to constantly wear the ring anymore to use its constructs. - Apparently having 5% of power lasts 24 hours on constant use with a stupid bird which again you aren't even wearing the ring. - Apparently Hal Jordan's suit isn't just applied with the ring (which its suppose to be) but instead he has a closet of them lol wtf - Hal Jordan is hated by people after 20 years because f*ck Green Lantern IG? No logic reasoning why. - Justice League doesn't exist. They can detect ships landing but not with these aliens, nope. - Hal Jordan's entire interrogation is "Oh you know football but not Harry Potter? ALIEN!!!" Can only imagine how many people he's killed off incorrectly, dude is worse than a lie detector. - The judge slapping on 200k on a flight risk from HIM being assaulted at a bar is wildly insane even for a superhero fictional setting. Last time I checked they started it with a 5 on 1 fight. - Pointless drama about John Stewart screwing some random chick who just happens to be married to main antagonist.. lol sure thanks trope central. - Basically a dumb True Detective/24 show where people are claiming its good just because 'mystery' where they aren't given the answers asap.
