Talk:Pacman development

From ArchWiki

feedback, technical guidance, and possible collaboration

Hello,

I’m an independent developer working on NeoArch, an open-source package and system management application for Arch Linux.

I wanted to introduce the project to the Pacman community and ask for feedback and guidance from people involved with Pacman and Arch Linux development.

NeoArch is designed as a unified interface for Arch Linux package management and system maintenance. It provides both a graphical interface and a CLI, while integrating functionality such as:

  • Official repository and AUR package search and management
  • Package installation, removal, upgrades, and downgrades
  • System update management and Arch Linux news
  • .pacnew handling and three-way merging
  • Package cache and orphan cleanup
  • Pacman keyring management
  • Package/build security scanning
  • System health checks and reboot detection
  • Backup and snapshot-related functionality
  • AppImage and Flatpak management
  • Scheduled updates
  • A CLI designed to provide simple access to common package-management operations

The project is currently maintained by me as a single developer, and I am continuing active development.

NeoArch is available through the AUR in two versions:

  • neoarch – stable releases
  • neoarch-git – latest development version

I understand that NeoArch is an independent frontend/tool and is not part of the official Arch Linux project. My goal is to build it in a way that respects Arch Linux and Pacman's design, conventions, and security principles.

I would especially appreciate advice from Pacman/libalpm developers and experienced Arch contributors regarding the best way to integrate with Pacman and libalpm, avoid duplicating functionality unnecessarily, and follow the recommended approaches for third-party frontends.

If there are existing development discussions, APIs, libraries, or areas of Pacman/libalpm that I should be aware of, I would be very grateful for any guidance.

Thank you to the Pacman and Arch Linux developers for the work you have already done, and thank you for taking the time to look at NeoArch. Sanjaya (talk) 07:42, 6 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's good to reach out. Still, your comment reads like a project ad and leaves open what you suggest to add to this article. You're very welcome to add a short reference of your project to Talk:AUR helpers, reading https://github.com/Sanjaya-Danushka/Neoarch#multi-source-management it appears to fit the helpers listed in that article. Please don't copy a long project description there, wiki maintainers can follow links to github/a project homepage. I close this item in the meantime. If you are unsure how to add something specific to this article, open a new one. Thanks. --Indigo (talk) 11:42, 6 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
