Configure newcomer dashboard for Wikidata (per community consensus)
Closed, ResolvedPublic2 Estimated Story Points

Description

Following community discussion and interest, we propose enabling the Newcomer Dashboard for Wikidata. The dashboard aims to provide guidance, helpful links, and mentorship opportunities for new editors.

Considerations:

  • "Newcomer Onboarding" section has generic Wikipedia text so we agreed to leave those fields empty for now, hiding the section until WMF adapts the text for Wikidata
  • Two thoughtful suggestions raised for later
    • Have a page with help around images that we could link to from here.
    • Develop a process for rotating community updates beyond just the Weekly Summary

Hi @KStoller-WMF, just wanted to see what you would need from us to get this deployed on Wikidata?

matej_suchanek renamed this task from Confugure newcomer dashboard for Wikidata (per community consensus) to Configure newcomer dashboard for Wikidata (per community consensus).Apr 9 2026, 4:51 PM

@Arian_Bozorg - I think just this task! I didn't realize consensus was reached, and I must have missed this task because it didn't have the Growth-team tag.

Let me chat with engineers about this and see if we can start on this ASAP, or if we need to consider waiting until after we do finish some architectural changes.
Sorry I missed this previously!

KStoller-WMF moved this task from Needs Refinement to Needs Estimation on the Growth-Team board.
KStoller-WMF set the point value for this task to 2.

@Arian_Bozorg it sounds like the Growth team will be able to work on this soon. A few things to mention:

  • The Growth team doesn't have capacity to complete Wikidata-specific customization. There are some small changes you might want consider like overriding the "articles" text to say "items" in the Impact module, and some minor changes like that, but I think that can be done without any Growth team involvement.
  • You might want to be ready to make some changes via Community Configuration (enable Mentorship? Add specific help docs? Set up a Community Update?)
  • Once enabled, the Homepage will be default enabled for all new accounts, but as of now existing accounts would need to opt-in via their preferences.

Is there a specific release date you are hoping for? Or should we simply release ASAP and let you know? Are there any questions you have before we release?

Thanks so much! There is no specific date at the moment, but ideally after the 11 May as I will be off before then. You can just let us know when it's up and we will make the small changes on our end.

No other questions from me :)

Hi, just wanted to see if there is a specific date that you are planning to release so that we can plan our communications around it?

@Arian_Bozorg We don't have any specific date planned, but we've had some competing priorities and we need to avoid any major releases next week. Would the week of June 15th work?

Yes that works for us, thanks so much

Change #1297161 had a related patch set uploaded (by Urbanecm; author: Urbanecm):

[operations/mediawiki-config@master] [Growth] wikidatawiki: Enable Growth features

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/1297161

Uploaded a preparing patch, which can be deployed in the next week.

@Arian_Bozorg - just checking in and letting you know that we will release this work next week: Tue, June 16th (unless you tell us not to). Am I correct in assuming you will manage any needed Wikidata communication?

@Trizek-WMF - This doesn't belong in TechNews, right? Is there any other internal or external communication you suggest?

Yes, thanks so much for the update on timing @Mohammed_Sadat_WMDE will send out the communications for the release on Tuesday 16 June

We can mention in in Tech News, ideally with the modules that would be activated. @Arian_Bozorg have you already worked on the community configuration?

@Arian_Bozorg have you already worked on the community configuration?

@Trizek-WMF Do note Growth-specific CommunityConfiguration is not available at Wikidata, because the features are not installed there yet :).

This is on a new domain so it could benefit from @Etonkovidova QA insight.

@Arian_Bozorg - this is released!
All NEW accounts will receive the homepage as default, and existing account can opt in via:

I highly suggest:

  1. add links to the most important docs to help newcomers get started via: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:CommunityConfiguration/HelpPanel
  2. consider adding a Community Update to highlight a specific resource, weekly call, or other resource to support newcomers: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:CommunityConfiguration/CommunityUpdates
  3. set up Mentorship: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:CommunityConfiguration/Mentorship

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm also happy to join a call or chat to help with any questions! :)

I have configured this as previously discussed at the Administrators noticeboard. However, some settings seem to be different from Beta, so review is much appreciated.

Lookoing good to me, thank you so much
