—Cloak[source]We've got to make a pact Tandy...a vow if we're gonna survive this. I swear i will always be there for you, Do you hear me?
Tyrone Johnson is Cloak, the Avatar of Darkness and one half of the divine duo Cloak and Dagger. After his exposure to an experimental drug and the machinations of a fear Lord known as D'Spayre, Tyrone's body became a portal to the Darkforce Dimension making him the living personification of the Darkforce Dimension and granting him the primordial powers over the very concept of Darkness.[17] Tyrone's powers made him a conduit to the darkness and Darkforce Dimension. He controls the Darkforce dimension, a primordial realm of darkness, and mastered its limitless dark energy, tempering it through will power alone. As a conduit, his body becomes a portal into the dimension that allows him to teleport and traverse any corner of reality along with the Darkforce dimension. Tyrone can also access to other primordial void-like dimensions, such as Nightmare's Dream Dimension[18] and even Mephisto's realm known commonly as Hell.[19]
As Cloak, he draws strength from his partner and soulmate, Dagger. The dark-light pair met after running away from home and meeting at a fateful bus stop in New York. There they were kidnapped and forced to take an experimental drug. Due to the experiment and the machinations of the fear lord, D’Spayre, Tyrone’s body was transformed into a portal into the Darkforce Dimension which granted him his powers over the concepts of darkness and fear itself.[17]

Cloak & Dagger[]
The Beginning of Cloak and Dagger
Cloak & Dagger befriended the super-powered preteens Power Pack and twice aided the New Mutants, junior trainees of the X-Men. The duo eventually learned they were supposedly mutants themselves, and that Marshall's drug had awakened their latent powers. Though they tended to target ordinary street criminals, they have also faced such diverse foes as Doctor Doom, the Beyonder, Vermin, the Zapper, the Disciplinarian, the Warlord of Kampuchea, Set, Mephisto, Thanos, the Assembly of Evil, Firebrand, and Lightmaster.

Police detective Brigid O'Reilly regarded the duo as a menace until they helped her capture serial poisoner Duane Hellman and told her of their origins. Later, when O'Reilly was betrayed and left for dead by corrupt cops, Cloak & Dagger used their powers to save her life, but the experience mutated Brigid's body and warped her mind. She became the vicious superhuman vigilante Mayhem, often fighting crime alongside Cloak & Dagger. O'Reilly's former partner, police detective Rebecca "Rusty" Nales, would become an ally to Cloak & Dagger as well.
Cloak continued to struggle with his power, and with the hungry Predator within his darkness. During a period when Cloak swore off consuming living beings, the Predator released the spirit of legendary killer Jack the Ripper to torment Cloak; however, when Jack betrayed the Predator in search of personal power, Cloak absorbed the madman and the Predator consumed Jack again. The drug-dealing crime boss Ecstasy (Renée Deladier) twice stole Cloak's powers for herself, largely because the Predator preferred the more ruthless Deladier as a host body. Cloak regained his powers both times, thanks in part to Doctor Strange. When the dream-demon Nightmare targeted Cloak, Tyrone prevailed with the aid of Dr. Strange and Dagger, who even managed to nullify Cloak's darkness altogether for a time; however, Tyrone feared that Dagger could only relate to him as Cloak, and he was soon manipulated into reclaiming his dark powers by the malevolent mystic Mister Jip. Tyrone's willing resumption of his Cloak form estranged Dagger, who briefly worked with the Black Cat before going back to Cloak, who had tried to find a helping hand in Dazzler. By this time, Jip was trying to usurp Cloak's body with the aid of his agents, Night and Day. Dagger defeated them all with the aid of the Predator, and the partners were reunited. Jip would continue to hound them, striking Dagger blind for a time, using the mad Delgado as a pawn, temporarily corrupting Dagger through the power of Night, and killing both Delgado and Father Bowen by mystically usurping their bodies. Cloak and Dagger would thwart Jip's plots again and again until eventually defeating him for good after he restored Tandy's Vision.[22]

Cloak and Dagger also found new friends in the New Warriors, who teamed with Cloak, Dagger, and other heroes to defeat the shadow-lunatic Darkling. Around the same time, Cloak & Dagger teamed with Spider-Man and others to halt a murderous super-villain rampage led by superhuman serial killer Carnage; later, Dagger helped rescue the New Warriors from the supremely powerful Sphinx. She accepted an offer of New Warriors membership, though Cloak declined to join. Serving as a Warriors reservist, Dagger also undertook a single mission with the informal Secret Defenders group.
Bloodthirsty fellow vigilante the Punisher had been both an ally and an enemy to Cloak & Dagger over the years. When Cloak went missing, Dagger helped form the unofficial "Marvel Knights" alliance with the Punisher and other vigilantes, and joined most of the other Knights in hunting the rogue Punisher after he left. Meanwhile, a Nightmare-manipulated Cloak embarked on a mad quest to consume all lawbreakers, absorbing the Punisher and many others until Dagger teamed with Dr. Strange to purge Cloak's corrupting darkness and rescue his victims. In the process, Cloak reverted to his human form as Tyrone Johnson, though this condition would prove temporary. Shortly thereafter, the Marvel Knights disbanded.
More recently, the secret criminal group known as the Pride tricked Cloak & Dagger into trying to retrieve their super-powered children. An encounter with these young Runaways soon convinced Cloak & Dagger of The Pride's true nature, but before they could act on this knowledge, the villains erased the duo's memories of The Pride. Cloak & Dagger continued to roam the mean streets, bringing the light of hope to the innocent and dark justice to the guilty.
House of M & Civil War[]
During the House of M crisis, Cloak was among the heroes awakened by Layla Miller, being initially part of Luke Cage's Human Resistance Movement.[24]
More recently, orderly Reginald Mantz managed to replicate Cloak's powers with the drug Mutant Growth Hormone. He then beat Dagger and left her hospitalized. The Runaways and the New Avengers found evidence of "Cloak" acting this way and confronted him; however, they eventually discovered the truth.[25]
He acted as a teleporter and active element during the Civil War, among the Secret Avengers.[26] He and Dagger were captured in a stratagem of Captain America to make S.H.I.E.L.D. trust his circumstances ally Wilson Fisk. They escaped, were recaptured, and freed for the final battle. As the Negative Zone Portal was closed, Tandy convinced Tyrone to open a portal to Manhattan where the battle continued.[27]
X-Men[]
At some point, Cloak and Dagger were active in Colombia, destroying drug plantations. The Drug lord hired Iron Patriot via the H.A.M.M.E.R. to take them down. Instead, he recruited them into his own X-Men and used them against San Francisco rioters and Stephen Lang's Bio-sentinels.[28]
When Emma Frost and Namor eventually revealed their true allegiance, they ask to Cloak and Dagger to stay back, and following the traitors on the newly build mutant-nation of Utopia, were presented by Cyclops as being part of his plan from the beginning, for them to be accepted in the community.[29]
He later helped Wolverine deal with Daken and Romulus, banishing the latter into the Darkforce Dimension.[30]
Spider-Island[]

All-New, All-Different[]
Now under Mister Negative's influence, Cloak and Dagger used Shade patches, which dosed them with a drug that simulated the effects of Negative's touch, to remain loyal to him after he was arrested at some point. Cloak, Dagger, and the Inner Demons broke into the Department of Justice transport ship where Martin Li was being kept, and restored him to Mister Negative. Some time later, as a part of Mister Negative's plan to take revenge on Shen Quinghao, he had Cloak and Dagger bring him to Peter Parker's office at the Parker Industries Building in Shanghai to corrupt him. Negative ordered Peter to slip a Shade patch to Quinghao at a ceremony at the Shanghai World Financial Center the next day to reveal his true nature as a former gangster in front of everyone. Peter was able to escape being corrupted thanks to Negative's prior corruption of Spider-Man, but Cloak and Dagger managed to escape when Peter tracked the duo to a drug lab by secretly placing a Spider-Tracer on Cloak. When Mister Negative realized Quinghao was not dosed and raided the ceremony, Peter was able to inject Cloak with an antidote using this tracer, and he subsequently cured Dagger with an antidote dart. With their original powers restored, Cloak and Dagger saved Quinghao, Lian Tang, and the Spider-Mobile from falling off the building. Although Mister Negative had escaped, Cloak and Dagger, now immune to his powers, decided to remain in Shanghai to guard it from any future attacks.[33]
Cloak and Dagger, along with Phillip Chang and Min Wei, later fought the Neon Dragon and the Inner Demons when they launched an attack on the Parker Industries Building to destroy the stock of antidote and kidnap its creator Dr. Yao Wu.[34]

Fall of X[]
After the fall of Krakoa, Cloak was captured by Director Vulture, who used technology he derived from Warlock to brainwash him into becoming a Hound. He would then later convert his partner Dagger, and they captured Kurt Wagner alongside Feral. Cloak went after Mystique on his own but she briefly killed him, he resurrected himself as she escaped with Kurt Wagner. He returned to the others as they took Reaper, Animax, and Fatale to become Hounds too. Cloak and Dagger would later be freed from their brainwashing and go out for drinks with their a new found ally Mystique.[37]
Blood Hunt[]
In preparation for the upcoming vampire uprising, the Structure transformed Cloak and other Darkforce users into portals to the Drakforce Dimension which allowed pure Darkforce energy to envelop the entire Earth and Blackout the sun. With sunlight blocked from reaching Earth, the vampires were free to spread worldwide and prey on the human population.[38] Cloak having the strongest connection to the Darkforce would later allow him to recover from the effects of the spell much faster than the rest of the Darkforce users and in a fully recovered state he went on to trap the Bloodcoven in a pocket realm of his own creation located at the end of the Darkforce Dimension.[39]

Queen in Black[]
Some time after the Bloodcoven's defeat, Cloak and Dagger would be recruited by Cable to join the newest iteration of the Defenders[40] that Iron Man created to fight Knull, who is empowered with the All-Light and Lightforce, and Hela, who is empowered by the Symbiote Hive. Cloak would join Team Dark, which consisted of; Iron Man, Cable, Darkstar, and Agent Anti-Venom, to fight against Knull.[41]
Upon arriving to Knull's location, Iron Man would have Cloak hang back, as he needed him for his "Plan B". However, that wouldn't come to fruition as Knull stabbed Cloak with the All-Light, fatally injuring him and Dagger through their soul connection.[10] Cloak's body would be saved by Darkstar, but his and Dagger's souls would be sent to the In-Betweener's realm where their connection would be tested.

Powers
- Living Portal: Due to exposure of an experimental drug and the machinations of D'Spayre, Cloak's body has become a portal to the Darkforce Dimension, a world that can only be described as umbral energy otherwise known as Darkforce. The Darkforce Dimension is also a gateway into other realms[42] which allows Cloak to traverse any corner of reality or any other dimension he pleases.
- Darkforce: As the Avatar of the Darkforce Dimension Cloak can use and manipulate the Darkforce at will, he is also the most powerful amongst all Darkforce users that exists with his power level not being close or comparable to anyone else with similar gifts, Doctor Strange believes it to be because while other Darkforce users use the dark matter as a tool Cloak is one with is and instead commands it, He is the Darkforce itself and bends it with his will to do his bidding.[43] When outside of the dimension Cloak's Darkforce takes on a gaseous or shadowy state that he can limitlessly produce. With Darkforce Cloak's only limit is his willpower as he's been shown to take others' life force as well as heal others.[44] Within the Darkforce dimension Cloak can manipulate the fabric of that reality and shape the realm to his whims,[44] even creating pocket universes within the dimension.[45]
- Darkforce Manipulation: Cloak can strip other Darkforce users of their powers completely, this is best displayed when he reverted his partner Dagger back to her normal Lightforce self after having her powers swapped by Mr. Negative.[46] Cloak can also channel Darkforce to create a field of darkness around his general area. Usually Tyrone uses his cloak as the focal point for this manipulation of darkness, though it can spread well beyond the confines of his cloak. People who become enveloped by Cloak's darkness tend to feel a numbing cold and experience terrifying visions of their own greatest fears and nightmares. Continuous exposure to the darkness can even drive people insane and any unprotected victims trapped in Cloak's dark realm are gradually drained of their life force, and presumably die unless Cloak releases them.
- Teleportation: Cloak can teleport by folding in on himself and entering the Darkforce Dimension through the portal that is his body, moving a short distance within it and then emerging wherever he chooses to be, essentially using the Darkforce as his door to anywhere he wishes to go.[44] A span of miles on Earth can be traversed in only a few steps via shortcuts through the Darkforce Dimension. Cloak can also teleport other people or objects along with himself in this fashion too, though this is usually reserved for Dagger since most beings cannot safely traverse the Darkforce. However, during the first Civil War, he teleported at least a hundred heroes and Thunderbolts from the Negative Zone to the skyline of Manhattan. There is no limit to the amount of people or objects he can carry inside his Cloak.[47] Cloak can also teleport by making use of any nearby shadows that surround him to move from one location to another.[48] To add, Tyrone has the ability to create portals as was showcased when he opened a portal into the Drakforce Dimension and reached his hand through it to pull his partner Dagger out of Harm's way.[49]
- Density Manipulation: Tyrone's powers grant him the ability to alter his body's density, often showcased when he shifts to becoming intangible allowing him to phase through objects and even letting objects (such as bullets) pass through him,[50] or solidifying his body to a very dense and compact state to reject beings from passing through him.[51] His Density manipulation makes him quite hard to hit or even harm, while also granting him invulnerability that shields him from airborne toxins[52] and even allowing him to breathe in the vacuum of space as well as well as underwater.[49]
- Darkforce Omniscience and Omnipresence: Cloak is the living embodiment of the Darkforce and Darkforce Dimension in its entire and endlessness and as such he is aware of any and every living and non living beings or things that enter or exit Darkforce Dimension. He showcases this best when he sensed The Spot accessing the Darkforce Dimension by an Unknown means and then again when he recalled the exact location within the Darkforce Dimension he had trapped Romulous.[53] He can also be frequently seen manifesting his glowing eyes inside the skies of the Darkforce Dimension to watch beings he's trapped inside it.[54] Additionally Cloak is also able to traverse every corner of the Infinite nothingness that in the Darkforce Dimension instantaneously as is best displayed when he moved from one corner of the Darkforce Dimension to another in which he trapped the Blood Coven in a prison of his own making.[45]
- Cloak Manipulation: Tyrone frequently uses his Cloak as an extension of himself often using it to stretch out and pull enemies or allies into his portal, this is best seen when he performed a mass teleport of at least a hundred heroes and Thunderbolts from the Negative Zone to the skyline of Manhattan during the first Civil War event. There is no limit to how far or wide his Cloak can stretch, he is also able to stretch his cloak out into band-like tendrils to pick up or wrap around objects and even people in need of saving this is best demonstrated when he uses his tendrils to save Dagger from an explosion[55] as well as using it to strap down enemies, these band-like tendrils are described as feeling like cold steel coils.[56] Tyrone can also warp his Cloak into any form of clothing he desires, often seen wearing stylish clothing like hoodies and sport jerseys that take after the color and properties of his Cloak.[8] While fighting Knull, Cloak even used his cloak to restrain him long enough to enact "Plan B".[57]
- Flight: Cloak has the ability to fly, often using his flight and levitation to keep himself floating in the air whenever he teleports to very high places.[58]
- Immortality: Cloak possesses immortality via the Darkforce, after his death,[59] Tyrone woke up in the Darkforce Dimension, it was later revealed to him and his partner Dagger[51] that his lifespan is infinite so he can never truly die or remain dead and that in the case of his death his soul would reside in the Darkforce Dimension awaiting his awakening.
- Balance: Reserved as a duo ability only performed with his partner and soulmate Dagger, both Cloak and Dagger after exchanging the excess amounts of their powers in each other's bodies can achieve a state of synchronized balance that allows them to unleash a combination of both of their powers on a lager than normal scale. They have used this ability to resurrect beings from the dead,[2] as well as level entire cities.[31]
- Telekinesis: The Darkforce grants Cloak a form of shadow telekinesis that allows him to move objects or people through the air without physically touching them and instead using the the darkness and shadows to move and even hit things if need be, objects and people he moves are often coated in a blue, purple, or even black and smokey Aura bubble-cloud that sparkles and glitters.[44]
- Darkness Manipulation: In addition to being able to use shadows to teleport Cloak can also drag enemies into the shadows, he is also often seen materializing and dematerializing out of and into the shadows essentially using the shadows to hide and make himself invisible to the naked eye.[60] Cloak is also able to manipulate the very concept of darkness, frequently seen manipulating it to become the night sky in battle to overwhelm and contain his enemies.[45]
- Psychic-Link: Cloak has a Psychic-link with his partner and soulmate Dagger[61] that allows them to always be able to locate one another as well as granting them the ability to communicate telepathically with each other.[44] In addition, their Psychic-Link can also shield the duo against telepathic attacks, seen when it prevented Dagger from having her mind controlled by Mister Negative.[44]
- Fear Manipulation: Tyrone has the psychic and supernatural ability to see and manipulate the fears of others, typically this done when he pulls a person into his Cloak,[62] however he can also use this ability by just physically touching someone. He is also known to be able to feed on others' fears as well as using his fear-sensing abilities to determine if a lifeform possesses a soul or not.[54]
- Invisibility: Tyrone can make use of the shadows to camouflage and render himself invisible to the naked eye.[63] He can also render himself invisible in broad daylight, showcased when he disappeared in front of a crowd of people to evade Luke Cage.[64]
- Pocket Universe: Cloak can create pocket universes within the Darkforce Dimension using them to house various creatures and even trapping enemies he captures in battle.[65] Cloak's pocket Dimensions cannot be accessed by anyone other than himself, displayed when he trapped the Blood Coven in a pocket Dimension of his own making.[45] To add both Cloak and his partner Dagger make use of one of his pocket universes as their current living space and home.[45]
- Darkforce Constructs: After his near-death experience from being stabbed with the All-Light by Knull,[10] Cloak and Dagger (who was affected from that stab) entered the In-Betweener's domain. While there, the In-Betweener revealed that Cloak's body was imbued with Lightforce Energy from All-Light, which in turn bled Darkforce Energy into Dagger's through their innate soul connection. This was originally supposed to cause their unraveling, but because of their love for each other and the help of Darkstar and Photon, it further strengthened their bond and their powers evolved, with Cloak being able to make Darkforce constructs from his body capable of piercing through Knull's Seraphim.[40]
Abilities
- Super-Human Strength: Tyrone's strength has been enhanced to an unknown degree, but it is enough to allow him to lift up to twice his body weight, as a result Tyrone can press lift at least 310 lbs.[citation needed]
- Peak Human Athleticism: Tyrone possesses incredible athleticism due to him growing up playing sports like basketball.[8]
- Multilingual: Tyrone has learned various languages and this allows him to able to speak Spanish fluently[67] as well as being able even understand his partner Dagger well enough to translate her words when she spoke an Alien language.[68]

Notes
- Tyrone Johnson AKA Cloak has been confirmed to being at least 6'0" tall.[69]
- Cloak had two sisters and one brother. One was his twin sister Anna, who was presumably separated at birth from Tyrone since he didn't recognize her when they met as adults.[70] Anna knew Tyrone was her twin brother but chose not to let Tyrone know this.[23] Another unnamed sister died from a drug overdose after she was introduced to drugs by their brother Otis.[59]
- The mutant status of Cloak and Dagger are very controversial, and has moved over the years:
- Cloak speculated that Leech having no effect on his powers was because he and Dagger weren't mutants.[71]
- Cloak and Dagger Vol 3 stated them to be mutants, and was full-titled "The Mutant Misadventures of Cloak and Dagger".[23]
- The Civil War: Battle Damage Report stated that the drug giving them powers in fact triggered latent mutant powers, but that they were science- and magic-based mutates.[27]
- When Norman Osborn came to recruit them for his X-Men, they stated they weren't mutants (to what Osborn replied they might as well be).[28]
- Dagger was 'confirmed' by Doctor Nemesis as NOT being mutant, with no X-Gene and no readings on Cerebro, but also no altered DNA helix or hereditary markers, her powers being solely based on the drug she and Cloak had been injected with.[8]
- It was stated by Steve Rogers that it was now confirmed that both of them weren't mutants but altered humans.[72]
- Cloak and Dagger were stated to be mutants in Marvel Fact Files #19.
- In earlier comics, Tyrone's Cloak form had distinct differences from his human form, including a deeper voice, increased stature, and textured skin described as "vaguely akin to petrified wood". According to Mister Jip, these changes indicated that Cloak was immortal, while the lack of such changes in Dagger meant that she wasn't.[73] Later comics would depict him with a normal-looking face in both forms.
Trivia
- The Byan'Nantandu referred to Cloak as the Darkforce portal guardian of Sector AEN-ZIOB3, which includes the planet Earth, suggesting that there may be other guardians in other parts of the universe.[14]
- Cloak is in a romantic relationship with Dagger.[1]
- Cloak and Dagger (Vol. 5) previously depicted them as exes who had entered and ended a relationship off-panel, and Cloak and Dagger: Negative Exposure - Marvel Digital Original #2–3 had them get back together and break up with their respective partners. This was apparently retconned in Savage Avengers (Vol. 2) #1, where they were shown as not having been together before and having broken up with their respective partners for different reasons.
- While the Defenders of Dark were fighting Knull, he refers to Cloak as a "Void-Imposter".[10] This is likely due to one of the forms Oblivion takes baring a striking resemblance to him.[74] After his evolution from almost being unraveled by the All-Light, Knull no longer views him as an imposter.[40]
