Hardwell, pseudonimo di Robbert van de Corput (Breda, 7 gennaio 1988), è un disc jockey, produttore discografico e conduttore radiofonico olandese.

Nel corso della sua carriera ha prodotto un gran numero di singoli ed è stato nominato due volte miglior DJ al mondo dalla rivista DJ Magazine, nel 2013 e nel 2014.

Biografia

Robbert van de Corput è nato il 7 gennaio 1988 a Breda, nei Paesi Bassi, da Anneke e Cor van de Corput. Da bambino prese lezioni di pianoforte e frequentò una scuola di musica.

Da adolescente cominciò a esibirsi come DJ nei club olandesi, proponendo generi che andavano dall'hip-hop alla trance; tra i 14 e i 17 anni fu seguito da Chuckie, all'epoca già uno dei DJ più noti del paese. Il suo pseudonimo fu un'idea del padre Cor, che fece un gioco di parole con il cognome di famiglia: tradusse cor, che in latino significa cuore, in inglese (heart), e put, che in olandese significa pozzo, sempre in inglese (well), ottenendo Heartwell. Robbert decise poi di rendere il nome più accattivante trasformandolo in Hardwell.

Carriera

2002-2009: gli esordi

Nel 2002, a 14 anni, firmò il suo primo contratto discografico con l'etichetta Digidance, per la quale pubblicò il mixtape Bubbling Beats Vol. 1. Tra il 2006 e il 2010, in contemporanea all'uscita dei suoi primi brani, pubblicò la serie di compilation Eclectic Beatz, distribuite nel mercato olandese. Nel 2008 il suo bootleg Show Me Love vs. Be ebbe successo nei club e fu apprezzato da DJ come Laidback Luke e Steve Angello, facendolo notare dall'etichetta Spinnin' Records.

2010-2012: Revealed Recordings e l'affermazione

Nel 2010 fondò la sua etichetta discografica indipendente, Revealed Recordings, dedicata anche alla promozione di giovani produttori. Nello stesso anno si esibì per la prima volta al festival belga Tomorrowland.

Nel 2011 entrò nella classifica Top 100 DJs di DJ Magazine, debuttando alla posizione 24, e lanciò il programma radiofonico settimanale Hardwell On Air, nel quale presentava, talvolta in anteprima, le nuove uscite del panorama dance. Nel frattempo fu notato da Tiësto, anch'egli originario di Breda, che divenne il suo mentore e con il quale produsse Zero 76.

Il 23 gennaio 2012 uscì il brano strumentale Spaceman, il suo primo successo globale, seguito a maggio dalla versione cantata da Mitch Crown, Call Me a Spaceman. A ottobre fu eletto sesto DJ al mondo da DJ Magazine e a dicembre pubblicò Apollo, brano progressive house realizzato con la cantante australiana Amba Shepherd e accompagnato da numerosi remix. Sia Spaceman che Apollo sono considerati due brani simbolo dell'era EDM dei primi anni 2010.

2013-2014: numero uno al mondo

All'Ultra Music Festival di Miami del marzo 2013 presentò per la prima volta Never Say Goodbye, realizzato con Dyro e Bright Lights e pubblicato a maggio. Il 19 ottobre, durante l'Amsterdam Dance Event, venne eletto da DJ Magazine DJ numero 1 al mondo, diventando il più giovane vincitore nella storia della classifica. Due giorni prima, il 17 ottobre, era stato presentato al cinema Tuschinski di Amsterdam il documentario I Am Hardwell, diretto da Robin Piree, che racconta la sua ascesa.

Nel 2014 pubblicò altri singoli di successo, tra cui il remix di Ping Pong di Armin van Buuren, Arcadia (con Joey Dale, altro produttore olandese cresciuto artisticamente sotto la sua ala, e Luciana) e Don't Stop the Madness (con W&W e il rapper Fatman Scoop). Durante l'esibizione a Tomorrowland di quell'anno di Tiësto, Hardwell salì sul palco a sorpresa e i due suonarono insieme. Il 18 ottobre, all'Amsterdam Music Festival, venne rieletto DJ numero 1 al mondo.

2015-2018: United We Are e i nuovi progetti

Il 23 gennaio 2015 pubblicò, attraverso la sua etichetta Revealed, il primo album in studio, United We Are. Il 13 ottobre dello stesso anno, durante l'Amsterdam Dance Event, fu presentato in anteprima al cinema Tuschinski il secondo documentario, I Am Hardwell – Living the Dream, anch'esso diretto da Robin Piree.

Nell'estate 2017 pubblicò i primi due volumi della serie di EP Hardwell & Friends e il 29 ottobre dello stesso anno si esibì sul podio del Gran Premio del Messico di Formula 1 a Città del Messico, primo DJ a farlo nella storia della Formula 1.

2018-2021: la pausa

Nel gennaio 2018 pubblicò il terzo EP Hardwell & Friends. Il 7 settembre successivo, attraverso il suo profilo Facebook, annunciò una pausa a tempo indeterminato dai tour a causa della pressione accumulata negli anni, continuando però a produrre musica.

2022-oggi: il ritorno

Il 27 marzo 2022, dopo oltre tre anni di inattività, tornò sulle scene chiudendo il palco principale dell'Ultra Music Festival di Miami come ospite a sorpresa. Il 9 settembre successivo pubblicò il suo secondo album, Rebels Never Die.

Stile musicale

Nel corso della sua carriera Hardwell ha cambiato stile più volte. Le sue prime produzioni house della fine degli anni 2000 si basavano su melodie semplici e loop percussivi essenziali; tra il 2010 e il 2011 il suo suono si arricchì di elementi progressive house, con tracce come Asteroid, Molotov, Zero 76, Alright 2010 e la celeberrima Spaceman. Con How We Do (2012) avvenne la svolta verso la big room house, genere che produsse in prevalenza per il resto del decennio e che lo rese famoso in tutto il mondo.

Tra il 2017 e il 2018, con i primi tre EP Hardwell & Friends, fece alcune incursioni nella trap, collaborando anche con rapper olandesi (come in Ze Willen Mee), e cominciò a sperimentare con l'hardstyle, fondendola con la big room house in tracce come Make the World Ours e Unity.

Dal ritorno sulle scene nel 2022 la sua musica segue il filone della big room techno (avviato da Maddix intorno al 2019), che unisce le atmosfere cupe e le casse martellanti della techno ai lead e ai drop energici della big room house.

Controversie

Faida con Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike

Nel 2015 si diffuse la notizia secondo cui il duo belga Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike avrebbe impiegato squadre promozionali munite di iPad per le strade del Belgio e al festival Tomorrowland, allo scopo di convincere i passanti a votarlo nella classifica Top 100 DJs di DJ Magazine. Nell'agosto 2015 Hardwell e il suo collega Dannic pubblicarono su Twitter dei messaggi in cui criticavano queste strategie, pur senza citare esplicitamente il duo, scrivendo rispettivamente che bisognava lasciare «parlare la musica» e che i fan non dovevano votare un DJ solo perché qualcuno per strada con un iPad lo chiedeva. Nei due anni successivi (2016 e 2017) Hardwell, presente a Tomorrowland ogni anno dal 2010, non fu inserito nella line-up del festival; alcuni media collegarono l'esclusione alla polemica, dato che Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike erano gestiti dagli stessi organizzatori del festival. Nell'ottobre 2015 Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike vennero eletti DJ numero 1 al mondo, spodestando Hardwell, che aveva occupato quella posizione nei due anni precedenti.

Nel dicembre 2017, durante lo show del duo belga Bringing Home The Madness ad Anversa, Hardwell salì sul palco e i tre suonarono assieme una traccia inedita, dimostrando almeno apparentemente di aver sepolto i problemi del passato. L'inedito si rivelò poi essere una loro collaborazione quando venne pubblicato a luglio 2018 sotto il nome Unity.

Esibizione al SAGA Festival 2024

Al SAGA Festival a Bucarest in Romania nel luglio 2024, il dj olandese ha interrotto bruscamente la sua esibizione pochi minuti dopo l'inizio a causa del mancato funzionamento delle attrezzature, esclamando frustrato che "tutto lo stava deludendo" e che "era impossibile per lui suonare". Ha inoltre aggiunto di aver viaggiato dai Paesi Bassi senza ricevere il minimo guadagno da parte degli organizzatori del festival ma di essere comunque lì unicamente per i suoi fans, per poi concludere dicendo di dover cancellare a malincuore lo spettacolo, insultando animosamente il festival ("f*ck Saga!") e andando via. Gli organizzatori hanno risposto prontamente su Instagram ai commenti di Hardwell sul palco, comunicando dispiacere per il fatto che tutti i dj sugli altri cinque palchi abbiano potuto esibirsi e lui no e ricordandogli che la sua attrezzatura ha viaggiato dai Paesi Bassi proprio come lui. Hanno aggiunto poi che la stessa funzionava alla perfezione nel set di Will Sparks, che si sarebbero adoperati tempestivamente per risolvere i suddetti problemi tecnici da lui riscontrati e che lo avrebbero pagato come concordato.
