The village of Battir in the West Bank.

    Etymology

    [edit]

Derived from Latin Palaestīna (“Palestine”), from Ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínē, “Philistia and the surrounding region”). The Greek name probably reflects a Semitic ethnonym or place name connected with Biblical Hebrew פְּלֶשֶׁת (Pəlešet, “Philistia, land of the Philistines”), possibly transmitted through Aramaic. The precise route into Greek is uncertain.

Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Palestina, Danish Palæstina, Swedish Palestina, German Palästina and English Palestine.

    Pronunciation

    [edit]
    • IPA(key): /pa.lɛsˈtiː.na/
    • Rhymes: -iːna
    • Hyphenation: Pa‧les‧ti‧na

    Proper noun

    [edit]

    Palestina

    1. a country in Western Asia, Middle East, a partially recognized state claiming the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip; official name: State of Palestine.
    2. Palestine (a region in the southern Levant, a historical-geographical name whose boundaries have varied over time, especially referring to territory between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River).
    3. (historical) the territory administered by the United Kingdom under the League of Nations mandate for Palestine from 1923 to 1948

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • The modern state, the historical-geographical region and the former British mandate territory are distinct senses of Palestina.
    • The historical regional sense does not imply that the area formed a single continuous sovereign state. Its boundaries, population and political administration varied considerably between historical periods.
    • The name predates Roman rule: Ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínē) is attested in the fifth century BCE. After the Bar Kokhba revolt, the Romans reused the older name in the provincial designation Syria Palaestina, replacing the former name Iudaea.
