    Etymology

    [edit]

Internationalism, based on Latin Libya, from Ancient Greek Λιβύη (Libúē). The Ancient Greek name is based on the ethnonym of the Libu, a North African people whose name is attested in Egyptian as rbw (“Libu; Libya”) and later in Punic as 𐤋𐤁𐤉 (lby). The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is unknown.

In ancient Greek geography, the name originally referred to the land west of the Nile and was later extended to Africa as a whole. The modern state name revives this ancient geographical name; Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan were brought together under Italian colonial administration under the name Libya.

Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Libya, Danish Libyen, Swedish Libyen, German Libyen, Dutch Libië, French Libye and English Libya.

Libya er en republikk i Nord-Afrika.
Libya is a republic in North Africa.
    2. (historical) Libya; Africa, especially the region west of the Nile, as named in ancient Greek geography; see Oldtidens Libya.
I oldtidsgresk geografi kunne Libya betegne hele Afrika. ― In ancient Greek geography, Libya could denote the whole of Africa.
      • 2024 November 26, Dag Leraand, “Libya (oldtidsgresk navn på Afrika)”, in Store norske leksikon‎[3]:
Libya, eller Libye, var navnet som oldtidens grekere brukte på Afrika.
Libya, or Libye, was the name used by the ancient Greeks for Africa.

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • The official Norwegian long-form name of the modern country is Staten Libya (“the State of Libya”).
    • The historical sense originally referred more narrowly to the land west of the Nile before being extended to Africa more generally.
