Overwriting dabs

[edit]

I stumbled across this well-intentioned edit, which overwrote a useful dab with an article draft. As an established non-redirect page, I think this creation would have avoided NPP. I wonder how common this sort of thing is, whether it can be detected easily, and if so whether we'd want to produce some sort of report or even an edit filter. I realise that there are legitimate uses such as rewriting a dab as a set index or a redirect to its sole entry, but it should be possible to filter out most false positives. Certes (talk) 08:09, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Using admin deletion powers we can split off those edits, so it's salvageable at least.
I was going to suggest an edit filter that WP:TAGs it, but we actually already have a "disambiguation template removed" tag added by Special:AbuseFilter/837 but for some reason it didn't match that time. --Joy (talk) 08:44, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Joy. As I hoped, this obvious problem has already been addressed long ago, and that edit filter is exactly what I was looking for. It didn't catch this case because the {{disambiguation}} template wasn't actually removed, just moved to the end of an enormous line of text where I didn't notice it. Certes (talk) 09:24, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
D'oh! No filter survives contact with the newbie editor :) --Joy (talk) 11:18, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I see this sort of overwrite occasionally. Perhaps a filter that tags large additions of text to a disambiguation page. I'm not sure what all can be done with filters, but I think I've seen something similar tagging addition of large block of unwikified text. While this one was unwikified, some others are more complete in appearance, so that alone would not catch all instances. There might need to be multiple filters, such as another one marking the addition of references to disambiguation pages (which is an issue even where the page is not an overwrite). older ≠ wiser 11:58, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Another example I came across just now: IRO. This is simple garbage, so nothing needed to separate valid article content, but it might be helpful to have a edit filter tag for things like this. older ≠ wiser 11:55, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The existing edit filter does a useful job well but is triggered by removal of the dab template so it's not going to catch any additions, however blatantly incongruous. I know it when I see it, but what machine-readable characteristics distinguish this slop (or even a good-faith attempt at a desirable article) from a plausible enhancement to a dab? Screeds of prose with no link could be something to look for. Even something as simple as 200 consecutive non-[] characters could work. Certes (talk) 16:43, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

What about the reverse of this? I have just come across Lickey which appears to have been an article about a village and has a dab page added above it.— Rod talk 14:29, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Much would depend on the earlier edit history. In this case, it has been an article about the village since 2005. I would just revert back to the article (I just did so) and if appropriate create the disambiguation. In this case, the new disambiguation appears to consist entirely of partial title matches.
In a similar example with a different outcome, Chris Halliwell had been an article about a supporting character in Charmed which was later turned into a redirect to a list article. Then very recently, an editor created a disambiguation page in place of the redirect. In this case, I (rather messily) moved the lengthy edit history to Chris Halliwell (Charmed) and then restored the new disambiguation at the base name. older ≠ wiser 16:17, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Miss Teen Universe

[edit]

Hello, I need help from an administrator to create a disambiguation page for the article as there are two versions: Miss Teen Universe (USA) based in the United States and another Miss Teen Universe (Ecuador) in the Republic of Ecuador. Thank you very much for your attention and assistance. Yahsabaot (talk) 02:37, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I converted the redirect at Miss Teen Universe to a dab and fixed the incoming links. I also renamed the first article per MOS:USA. Nick Number (talk) 03:00, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sex is now a disambiguation page

[edit]

We moved Sex to Biological sex, and made Sex the disambiguation page. Sex (disambiguation) now points there. I don't see any mention of this in the recent archives. Has this already been solved? WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:30, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

What needs to be solved? If consensus is that there is no primary topic for the term Sex, then the dab page should be at Sex, and Sex (disambiguation) should redirect there for use when a link to the dab page is intentional and not an ambiguous link that needs to be fixed. —ShelfSkewed Talk 02:03, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I found Talk:Sex#Page move. This was done as the result of a technical request, which has no apparent archive other than page history. The solvers might still be working on it, as I see a couple of articles on the first page of "What links here" where relinking seems necessary. The discussion was here:

Thank you for that, editor PamD! Those two articles I found have been dablinked. I also fixed a category and three pages in Draftspace. The rest are all talk pages, user pages, project pages, and so on. I didn't find any more mainspace pages that needed dablinking, so thank you very much editors Amakuru and Tamzin, as dablinking such a page as Sex must have been a bit of a chore. We can safely say that Sex has been thoroughly solved (well, at least in a dabbing sense ). P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 06:36, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was also discussed at Wikipedia:Move review/Log/2026 June#Biological sex, where the move was endorsed. PamD 07:35, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks again – I should have remembered that MRV since I !voted in it. I've had some personal challenges lately and am not the sharpest tack on the bulletin board. You da bomb! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 07:44, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it makes sense having sex as a disambiguation page. I don't see this as a problem.4meter4 (talk) 04:24, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't see it as a problem, but how many articles now link to the dab page? There could have been hundreds of incoming links. Did anyone update them to point to the new page? WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:54, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
but how many articles now link to the dab page? none (excluding intentional links). There could have been hundreds of incoming links. There were certainly many, but this was foreseen and so the answer to Did anyone update them to point to the new page? is "yes" - see Talk:Sex#Page move. Thryduulf (talk) 20:21, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. That answers my question. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:54, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Discussion alert, re primary topic

[edit]

AFAIK, the primary topic has to have a name identical to the DAB name, which is then disambiguated on a separate page, so I commented on Talk:Browser about a recent change to this DAB. Please advise on that talk page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 09:56, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
