Video games in Turkey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2025, the Turkish gaming industry was worth around $2.2 billion, with about half of the figure coming from mobile games.[1][2] Turkey’s video game revenue was $464 million in 2015, and $755 million in 2016—a 63% increase compared to the previous year.[3] Turkey ranked 16th in the world in online game revenue during 2016.[3] As of 2021, Turkey was ranked the 18th largest gaming market in the world.[4][5] This ranking is partly due to studios such as Peak and TaleWorlds, who published Mount & Blade.[6]

Professional gaming

[edit]

Turkey has a presence in the professional e-sports market, especially in League of Legends and other games created by Riot Games.[7][8]

The Türkiye Digital Games Federation was established in 2011 and later superseded[9] by the e-Sports Federation of Turkey on April 24, 2018.[10][11]

Regulation

[edit]

The most widely used video game content rating system in Turkey is the PEGI (Pan European Gaming Information). It was introduced to the country in 2014–2015 and is not supported by an official legal basis. It is used in both foreign and Turkish published video games,[12][13] though Turkey is not officially represented in the PEGI council. Other labels can be seen such as the German USK, particularly on second-hand items.[14][15]

In 2006, the Intellectual Property Registration and Registration Department began to regulate video games. This required the use of a rating system, similar to what was implemented for film and television in order to be sold on the Turkish market.[16] The criteria used for ratings are still legally uncertain as it is only enforced on physical products. Digital games remain unregulated.[17]

The 2007 Regulation on Internet Bulk Use Providers prohibited internet cafés from allowing customers to play video games containing drug use, incitement to suicide, sexual abuse, obscenity, prostitution, violence, and/or gambling that could negatively affect minors´ development.[18]

Currently, games can be banned by the Ministry of the Interior.[19] As of 2016 no games have effectively been banned, though some games have been investigated due to their content.[20][21]

  15. ↑ Foreign video games published for sale in Turkey are almost all published under European (And EU) licenses, including Turkish-published video games, and almost all are imported from Europe or the European Union, and thus having the PEGI labels on them though it is not officially supported by law. Those released under European licenses can be Turkish branches of the European publishers,(e.g Under a EU or other European based parent company.) -or just European publishers on their own which have the valid and certified (licensed) European licenses that are published with the sold items in Turkey, thus making it verified & certified. (And in case of warranty, all have it covered by a warranty as well.)The classification was semi-officially brought to Turkey in 2014 with a deal between private-owned TOGED (Game Developers Association of Turkey) and PEGI. Second-hand sold items in shops can have different labels, mostly such as the German USK. PEGI is also used while advertising video-games, and in the commercials.
