What to do with old photos

[edit]

Hello from North Louisiana! I’m wondering what do you do with photos once you upload them? Should I delete all the pictures from my phone that I’ve taken and already uploaded? Or save them? Ktkvtsh (talk) 14:24, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Early closure

[edit]

You closed the second nomination of Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Areylle after just 4 days. Dronebogus' original mass DR mostly argued "fetish", my mass DR was about accuracy. The INUSE argument is in the process of being resolved after I got mswiki involved which was responsible for the majority of the uses.
I say delete, Dronebogus says delete, Belbury just has an INUSE problem (which was getting resolved) and seems neutral otherwise, Taylor 49 says delete, Lx 121 wants to keep and Andy wants to keep. This wasn't a COM:SNOW DR to close speedily. At the same time you speedily closed several of the individual DRs that had no more rationale than "Unused fetish slop" as "delete".
Could you please revert your closure? (if that's technically difficult I can do it with a tool) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:50, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I wondered if there was maybe a misread here. Dronebogus's individual DRs weren't a carefully considered subset - I think they were intending to indiscriminately nominate all of this user's AI content for deletion as "fetish slop", but were doing so one DR at a time for whatever reason, and hadn't finished.
Alexis Jazz stepped in to make a single DR covering all the images, to keep the discussion in one place, and has been giving the images an actual case-by-case review. (And - thanks for this - communicating with other projects on the INUSE question.) Belbury (talk) 21:25, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Belbury, I just noticed one of the speedy closes was Commons:Deletion requests/File:Matsyasana.png which was in use. I'm guessing by accident as Dronebogus replaced the wrong image in Matsyasana (Diff ~6875769), the caption doesn't match the image anymore. I'll fix that article. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:00, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cats on horse-drawn vehicles

[edit]

@Infrogmation: Why have you twice removed Category:Horse-drawn carts in Mexico and Category:Horse-drawn vans from File:Corn vender carriage in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico 1924.tif?   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 05:34, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Because it is a TIF duplicate of a categorized jpg, per categorization in Category:TIFF images with categorized JPGs. The two versions are linked to each other, and the jpg version has the descriptive categories. (I did not start this practice; as I understand it it avoids duplication, TIFs are archival, and jpg versions generally preferred for usage.) Thanks for asking and thanks for your work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 05:40, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. I'm new-ish to WikiCommons and recently started categorizing many carriage images, then realized the horse-drawn category hierarchy was wonky and I'm trying to fix it too.
I've seen these .tiff and .jpg pairs before, wondered about them, then moved on. Good to know about this little bit of wikicommons. I'll keep an eye out for them because I do encounter them.
WikiCommons seems like the wild west compared to Wikipedia, with less templates and noticeboards and stuff. It's nice to 'meet' someone who speaks native English. If I have questions, can I leave you a note or email you? Once I'm oriented on a subject, I can accomplish much on my own.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 05:57, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I'm a regular and admin on Commons. If you have questions you can't find answers to feel free to ask. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 06:02, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wonderful. Do you have a preference between your user talk page, somewhere else, or email? And my first question: Does WikiCommons have sandboxes or can I just make one? (I've been using my user page for notes.)   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 06:07, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • (unindent) If it's something you don't mind being seen by others, my talk page is usually good - most days I'm on Commons more often than checking my email. I don't know about sandboxes, but user subpages are fairly common (User:name/subpage name). -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 06:13, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infrogmation: I sent you an email asking some questions about categories.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 06:00, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Got it, will give it some thought then reply. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:12, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • @Grorp: Thanks for your message. I'm replying here, some details I may not have useful comments on, but I'll share a few general thoughts. Categorizing types of horse-drawn vehicles is an important and worthy project. (I expect I'm similar to many people with some interest in history in knowing that there was specific set terminology for such vehicles but not knowing enough to give proper names by sight). Your sandbox overview at User:Grorp/sandbox looks to my non-expert eyes to be well done and useful. Moving it to a gallery page IMO would be appropriate. It is not uncommon for people interested in a topic to have different levels of expertise. Talk pages are often useful in clearing disputes, especially if more than 2 people can be found. Sometimes it's useful to have images in more than one category on different category trees - for example categorized both by specific name of vehicle type and for country of location... though if there are large numbers of images sharing such categories, an intersection category like "Xx type vehicles in Yy country" can be useful. I'm sorry I don't have better or more specific advice on some of your points, but on chance that some of what I say might be helpful, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for your work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:31, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

New Orleans

[edit]

I’m in New Orleans for a few days for a business trip and vacation if you’d like to meet up for a drink. If you know of any pet friendly places. I’ve got my dogs. Ktkvtsh (talk) 03:40, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Are you going to be mostly in a particular part of town? Not having a dog myself, I'm not too familiar with where is dog friendly. One place I happened to notice is I visited the other day "The Batture" https://www.batture.com Category:The Batture, New Orleans. It's pleasant, but located rather at the far end of uptown, out of the way if you're not visiting the Universities or the Zoo. I'm sure there are other possibilities you can find in a search. Enjoy your visit! -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:17, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
We have enjoyed our stay so far. We are staying in the central business district. The Golden Lantern is a dog friendly bar we found. We’ve spent our first day mostly in the central business district and French quarter. We drove over and saw the old buildings by the hope haven walking trail in Marrero. There’s so much to see! @Ktkvtsh: If you haven't already found it, "Dog friendly guide to New Orleans" webpage https://www.neworleans.com/blog/post/dog-friendly-guide-to-new-orleans/ may be of interest. How long are you in town for? It looks like I'll be busy through Monday. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:43, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Can you check building name for me?

[edit]

Good afternoon, I believe I have mixed up some building names. I think I had it right in the beginning and thought I was wrong and requested some moves.

- Ktkvtsh (talk) 19:26, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

From a quick look that does look like the Boggs building. Two rather architecturally similar buildings a block apart. If it's helpful, the Hebert Buildings is the one on Lafayette Square (upriver side, meaning furthest from Poydras), Boggs fronts Poydras Street. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:57, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do you have the ability to move those yhree images back to the Boggs titles? Or should I request moves again? Ktkvtsh (talk) 22:42, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

You shortly deleted these files "per nomination.". In the discussion I wrote i.a.: "However, uploading of files with visible but relatively unobtrusive watermarks is merely discouraged, not prohibited." I consider all of the signatures relatively unobtrusive." Do you not consider these relatively unobtrusive? NDG has now nominated four other files, three of which are currently used in the German-language and/or Italian Wikipedia.

Thanks in advance for reconsidering! Noah.Albert.ZivMilFü (talk) 07:45, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just because something was kept once doesn’t automatically mean it gets kept a second time after very slightly longer than the bare minimum time required for a DR. Advice on copyvio deletion

[edit]

Good afternoon. I have discovered that Twixister has uploaded a large amount of copyrighted material and claimed it to just have no notice of copyright, which I have found to be false. Should I nominate every image I find to be a copyright violation for deletion, or do I put the Copyvio speedy deletion template on each of them? Or should I gather them all into one deletion discussion? Ktkvtsh (talk) 18:21, 25 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good question. Some thoughts off the top of my head: Having a place where you show the evidence that the user is unreliable or makes false license claims would be useful. Possibly in a deletion request. If a user is shown to repeatedly upload multiple copyright violations, they can forfeit assumption of good faith, so images do not need to be evaluated one-by-one. If there is a particularly large number of suspect images that is daunting to list, perhaps list a few - after the listing is deleted, you can use a link to that discussion when requesting speedy deletion of more similar. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:54, 25 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

NSFW

[edit]

Hello, I see why you removed the Sexualized nudity, erotica or ecchi (Q138829111) value here, as toplessness is not inherently sexual. For better or worse, it is considered NSFW in many workplaces. Is there a different value you might prefer for Wikimedia Commons content descriptor (P14416)? Perhaps simply toplessness (Q83772) or not safe for work (Q2716583)? I'm looking for an appropriate value to assign to that property so that this script (and similar) can function: User:Bawolff/nsfw. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer, and thanks for your work in general. Jerimee (talk) 20:03, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Toplessness is the correct value. Ktkvtsh (talk) 19:57, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree. Already wikidata (as well as categorization) notes it as topless women. That would seem to be sufficient and accurate here. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:31, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Disputing keep closure

[edit]

Why did you close Commons:Deletion requests/File:TheEmotionsgroup.png as keep? There was no evidence provided that the original publication of this photo was in 1977 and without copyright notice, which is what is relevant for determining copyright status. – Howardcorn33 (💬) 17:29, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

file:Ejaculation-blondie.jpg

[edit]

You closed the DR for this image based on per majority of votes in multiple listings. That makes absolutely no sense. The other two listings had completely different rationales and the voters responded to those specific rationales. I provided a different rationale that the earlier discussions simply did not apply to. Your closure is the equivalent of saying “candidate A won two previous elections, therefore they won this election because a majority of votes cast in all three were for them”. And closing based solely on precedent wouldn’t make sense either, for the same reason that the first two DRs had different rationales to the latest one. Dronebogus (talk) 21:40, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • If you prefer, I could have said "No requirement to delete, no consensus to do so." That it was kept multiple different times as well was IMO a factor as well, but certainly not the only consideration. Thanks. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:19, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • Suggestions or work helping clear the horrible backlog of deletion requests very welcome. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:20, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can’t help clear it because I’m not an admin. My suggestion is to make it easier for people to become admins or create an image deletion user group, not to close DRs as quickly and sloppily as possible. Dronebogus (talk) 05:17, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
      • Creating some sort of image deletion user group might be a good idea; if you have some concepts about that I suggest you make a proposal. While I regret that it is not realistically practical for admins to regularly put in considerable of time to research things like copyright registration and renewal data for lots of media, if you meant to cast shade in my direction with that "as quickly and sloppily as possible" comment, I resist. A good number of deletion listings I look at I leave without comment or action as I realize that I would need to do more research than I have time for, and hope someone else may be better versed on the underlying issues. My closure of the particular case you brought up was not sloppy. It was considered and according to precedent. If you had nominated this unused photo and no one else had voted nor argued for it to be kept, I would have been happy to delete. That was not the case here. Thanks for your feedback. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:28, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Dezider Hoffman

[edit]

Hi. Could you please explain your closure of this DR?

My statement is that Commons well-documented policy is to prefer the home country.

The rest of the comments were as follows:

  • A comment about URAA (not relevant for which country Commons considers home)
  • "in the case of legally simultaneous publication... we have the option of which country to choose as country of origin" - again, this is a reference to URAA, not Commons policy.
  • Two w:WP:EVERYONEELSE (doesn't address my core contention)

AFAICT, there is no Commons policy stating otherwise, and this image should have been deleted, or at very least discussion should have been remained open.

Please let me know if I've missed anything. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:52, 16 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I said "per discussion". I have no expertise on the details of these particular cases involving interaction of different national laws and "simultaneous publication", but I noted multiple users, some experienced and knowledgeable, stating that this was ok per how Wikimedia follows copyright laws. I accepted their judgement. You might wish to contact Jmabel and RAN for further feedback. Thanks for your work; sorry if my reply wasn't as informative as you might have hoped. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:05, 16 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK. I don't agree that's a very good reason to keep. We should close discussions based on Commons policy, not popular vote. No one has quoted a policy; in fact, it seems like people wish this were Commons policy. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:19, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree completely that deletion listings should be closed based on Commons policy, not popular vote. That's what I was trying to do. Very often policy is clear and easily determined; other times such determination is more difficult. That is why I relied on the informed judgement of RAN and Jmabel. This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Clarification requested

"I see no copyright notice".

There's a copyright notice in the little white box at the bottom, right below the black box that says "Stain Resist". It says "Printed in U.S.A.; copyrighted 1954 by Lane Bryant, Inc".

Was this an oversight on your part, or is your argument that this copyright notice is in some way not valid? Thanks. DS (talk) 12:56, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, error in my part, thank you. I was looking in the wrong place (notices more usually near front or back, but you correctly point out it was right on that page). I'll relist the image. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 13:31, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Reconsideration request – File:Diana S Engelhard UFB Harbor 02.jpg

[edit]

Hello,

I would like to ask you to reconsider your January 2026 keep decision regarding File:Diana S Engelhard UFB Harbor 02.jpg.

I am the original uploader, copyright holder, and the person depicted in the photograph. I am now writing from the original uploading account, Diana.Engelhard.

My earlier deletion requests were made from my newer account, Dianasengelhard. In the first deletion discussion, the request was kept specifically because there was insufficient evidence that the nominator was also the uploader. I have now recovered the original account, so that identity issue is resolved.

I also want to clarify that I am not seeking to revoke the CC BY 4.0 licence. I understand that the licence is irrevocable. I am requesting a courtesy deletion of this particular file as the original photographer/uploader and depicted person.

It is an outdated personal selfie, has no significant encyclopedic use, and is readily replaceable by other freely licensed photographs of me. I would therefore appreciate reconsideration of the previous keep decision in light of this new information.

Thank you. Diana.Engelhard (talk) 11:06, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Some baklava for you!

DR help

[edit]

Hi Froggy,
I originally posted this on Yann's talk page. I think you understand car photography a bit more than they do, so I will repost it here. I recommend you read that discussion first, however.

Basically, I nominated 4 low-quality photographs that I uploaded on Independence Day 2026 for deletion. Each has issues, and despite this fact they were kept as "no valid reason for deletion."

You can see the list of files for deletion there. Commons:Courtesy deletions is still a proposal, but most of what it says reflects the community's stance.

For each file:

The truck is modified, with aftermaket paint, bumpers, wheels, and bed box. The files are too dark and the truck's modifications make it a poor candidate for encyclopedic usage. Additionally, C20s of this era are relatively common.

The Trax is a vehicle that is still being sold, and my photograph has noticeable glare issues.

The GTI picture is crooked, and has major sun issues. Additionally, the car itself is very common and I could take a much better picture if needed.

A user on one of the DRs did tell me that courtesy deletions were commonly granted for unused files, but for whatever reason people are taking a very by-the-book approach to it here.

Thanks. CutlassCiera 16:06, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Cutlass: I don't understand why you are asking here. I told you that courtesy deletions are only granted if there is a valid reason, e.g. privacy, etc. I don't see any here. Yann (talk) 16:28, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've interacted with him before and I thought I'd have a second opinion. Nothing more than that. CutlassCiera 17:38, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for asking, but details about the photos you find problematic would more appropriately go in the deletion requests. As noted, uploader courtesy deletions with no reason needed are by policy 7 days - in practice, if the photo is unused an admin may give a few days extra leeway. Beyond that, "I changed my mind" is not a sufficient reason for removal from Commons (in part this is a reflection of the irrevocable free licenses used, and also to prevent potential chaos of sudden deletions of media by personal whim long after the the fact). The photos you listed don't seem to have serious problems. Maybe you don't consider them among your very best photos, but Commons is not just for hypothetical very best photos. For things like makes of automobiles for example, an article might only use one or two photos, but having additional photos in a Commons category makes additional information available. When you know a vehicle has aftermarket modifications, including that information in the photo description page can be helpful - it doesn't make the photo out of scope. I notice one of the vehicles is a half-century old pickup truck apparently still in use - that it doesn't look showroom new is to be expected. Hope this helps. Thanks for your work and uploads (even those you think aren't your very best). Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:21, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I was under the impression that DRs for own work are fine. I suppose quality issues from my perspective aren't as noticeable by others. I'll adjust my bearings from now on. CutlassCiera 17:49, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh DRs for one's own work are perfectly fine. Just don't be surprised if they aren't always granted if there isn't a clear reason why the image needs to be deleted. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:55, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Appreciated for revert

[edit]

Thanks for reverting - I couldn't do it on my own.

Just curious - how did you noticed this redundancy? I mean - usually noone much care about any edits until there's some active template set or newly formed categorization was made and I usually confused leaving such an excessive text. ~2026-49216-86 (talk) 04:18, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Same as File:Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre 200906(cropped).jpg , I think you can feel free to delete, because this file is only use for vandalism and LTA sock, many users revert back due to this image, another Central plaza photo which is also cropped for vandalism. Anonymous user ~2026-46855-29 (talk) 11:57, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Infrogmation I see another user report that image of IFC so I don’t request delete for that, but I know same as that file this file is use for the sock themselves Anonymous user ~2026-46855-29 (talk) 12:02, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Passing through a Haor.webm

[edit]

Hi, when closing deletion requests for files that were tagged as not having a license, please make sure that the file is actually displaying the license template. Having the name of the license is enough to establish that someone intended to publish their work under a free license, but we need the template for Commons to be in compliance with the license. I have fixed File:Passing through a Haor.webm for you. AntiCompositeNumber (they/them) (talk) 23:18, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see that one had the license as text, but no template. Thanks for fixing it. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:22, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Help on move

[edit]

Good evening, I made a category move and I believe I made the right choice. Could you check? Also, is there an easier way to change categories for multiple images in a category or must it be done manually? Ktkvtsh (talk) 01:29, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Obviously consensus to keep. But does that consensus rest on the requirement that some cropping is done? DMacks (talk) 13:29, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
