We use the serial port to connect to a liquid scintillating counter that was made before USB came along.
The Counter still works so we have no need to replace it.
We have however had to replace the Computer it is connected to because various parts of it, suck as the floppy disc drive failed and we needed to sort out some additional data storage.
We originally used a 4k PET machine with 2 5.25inch floppy discs.
We had to rewrite the software on a 286 based PC with DOS and a 40mb hard disk in the mid 1990s.
Various companies have tried to persuade us to upgrade to a more modern LSC but they are too expensive for the amount of use we get.
