What Does It Mean to Be Feminine?
In this quiz, we assess how feminine you are—but what exactly does it mean to be feminine? Traditionally, the term "feminine" was thought to describe the traits commonly associated with women, like caring, nurturing, intuition, emotion, and creativity. On the flip side, "masculine" meant displaying traits traditionally associated with men, like leadership, strength, protectiveness, logic, and assertiveness.
Today, however, many people have come to understand that gender is a social construct, rather than a naturally occurring category. This means that there are many different ways to be "feminine," and femininity isn't restricted to people who identify as women. You can be as feminine (or not feminine) as you'd like, regardless of your gender identity or the sex you were assigned at birth—it's all about what feels most authentic and affirming to you![1]
Navigating your own femininity and gender expression can be a little confusing, so we also checked in with wikiHow's gender experts for their helpful insights on the topic. Here's what they had to say:
- "The cool thing about gender identity or the way we feel about ourselves and the way we label it is that it can be very different from the way that we present ourselves...In society, there's often that conflation of if you are a woman, then you dress femininely, if you are a man, you dress masculinely, and that's it. But within the world, within any gender...there are really no rules. So you can present in whatever ways feel best to your body," says licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ Identity expert Zoe Stoller.[2]
- Stoller adds that anybody can feel feminine, even if they don't identify as a woman. "For example, I'm genderfluid and so my gender identity shifts and changes over time and sometimes I feel more connected to womanhood and sometimes I feel more connected to manhood, sometimes neither," they explain.[3]
- Queer linguistics educator and cultural commentator Dean Modah also mentions that people who identify as men can embrace femininity, too. For example, he explains that some people feel affirmed by the label of "femboy," which is "just a boy who naturally embodies feminine qualities...they naturally gravitate to feminine things."[4]
- Ultimately, LGBTQIA+ activist and educator NV Gay concludes, "No matter how you present your identity, you are valid...there are so many different ways to express yourself underneath a different flag or different identity. You can be who you are. And I think that's what's beautiful."[5]
