Wikidata:WikiProject Govdirectory/Data model

This is a draft for a data model for public agencies. This is meant to be a generic and global data model, so add important country specific properties on the country subpage instead of here. Often it is very helpful to use specific items for the types in a country as the instance of (P31), like ministry of the Netherlands (Q3143387) rather than just a generic ministry (Q192350). Not only will it make queries easier, it will also be usful on items like list of ministries of the Netherlands (Q26720850) and Category:Government ministries of the Netherlands (Q8394832) which are likely to exist anyway for major types of organizaitons.
Please help improve this model!
There is also an extensive Entity Schema that you can use to discover new properties and use in various tools.
Besides the statements, also make sure that the label and description are good.
- Labels
- Having these in English is important, because that is what we show on the website. It is also very helpful to have labels in all local languages as that may make it much easier to match them on official lists and websites. Don't use disambiguations like "in Sweden" or "(Sweden)" in the label unless that is actually part of the name, see Help:Label.
- Descriptions
- try to put in thorough descriptions so that it easy to disambiguate items. It might be useful to describe the following characteristics: type, structure, place, mission. For example, "Swedish agency under the Riksdag responsible for hearing appeals regarding general elections".
If you are using this data model to edit in bulk (and have some authoritative sources), see the guides for collecting and preparing data and how to upload it using QuickStatements.
Model for an agency/organization
[edit]In this WikiProject, we aim to model all public organizations and/or agencies. However, in some countries, defining these are not trivial. Whereas in some places, these are defined in law and sometimes even given a unique ID and listed in a register, in other places the type may be defined in law and the individual entities may be defined by the current cabinet, government, parliament, ministry or some other level of decision makers. It may sometimes also be unclear if an entity is a part of another entity or if it is an independent suborganization. When this is challenging, some guiding principles for the project can be whether the entity is referred to, or understood by, by the public to be something that one can contact and communicate with. Signs of this may include if they have their own Wikipedia article, have their own website and social media accounts etc. When judgment calls like this are made, it is essential that they are documented on the project page so that other editors can understand the modeling and possibly help improve it.
