Motivation
[edit]nasljerseys.com is a website documenting defunct 20th-century American sports leagues in great detail. Although it is not the most modern looking website, it is one of the most in-depth resources on these oft-forgotten leagues that I am aware of. Although I am sure there will be some skepticism about linking to a fan-run website, I have referred to the site quite a bit and not found any mistakes; it seems to be fairly accurate. It is currently referenced 491 times on enwiki and has been referenced by reliable sources (e.g. The Athletic, The Guardian, Sports Illustrated). I think it would be valuable to be able to link to nasljerseys.com from Wikidata.
Regarding the identifier format: URLs begin with the player's league (except for NASL players' URLs, which just begin with "Players"). However, regardless of the URL format, the page will cover the player's career in all leagues, and a player will generally not have more than one page about them. So if you look at the player index on the MISL, ASL, or EBA pages, you'll find many of the links go to the NASL or ABA sections of the website. I don't love having nearly the full URL in the identifier, but it seems unavoidable given the oddities of the URL format (especially with XYZ players, as "XYZ" is sometimes capitalized and sometimes not in the URL). –IagoQnsi (talk) 18:27, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
