name translation
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Person
Motivation
[edit]There is no way to find out what specific name a person have. For example, Charles III (Q43274) is translate into Greek Κάρολος, into Russian in several ways - before the coronation Чарльз, after - Карл, but his real name Charles does not changing. In addition, he has several names and each of them can be translated differently. See Arthur, it depends on the specific person: for one person it is translate one way (Артур), for another - another way (Артюр). In order to choose one of the options, we need an extra property.
The value of the property will be a specific entity (or a string in the native language?), and in the qualifiers we indicate which entity we are translating and additional translation fields.
Here we can also specify translations into other languages, in which it is necessary to eliminate ambiguity. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by CupIvan (talk • contribs) at 20:30, May 26, 2025 (UTC).
Discussion
[edit]
Comment This probably should be lexeme-valued, not item-valued, as the values are specific to one language. Also your description is wrong, this is not the subject's native language. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:49, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
Not done, no support for creation. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 13:23, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
