Motivation

[edit]

These images does not feel appropriate for apportionment diagram (P14226) so i felt this was necessary. There is a huge difference between an image showing an election and a graphic created for the purpose of illustrating the result of said election

From the recent constraint added to depicts (P180) there appears to be at least 4096 files that will have to be moved to the new property--Trade (talk) 15:16, 4 April 2026 (UTC)reply

This is both an diagrem and it shows appointment
This is neither a diagram nor does it show the seats won by party in an election

  •  Comment: In the proposal for apportionment diagram (P14226), you said "don't agree with the use of imatge (P18) to showcase apportionment diagrams". This is correct. However, only one value of P18 shows "seats won by party diagram". Close to a dozen are really pictures (polling stations, debates, ballots, ...), and the rest until 72 are maps with results that, I presume, must be moved to this new property.
At this point, I wonder why do not use distribution map (P1846) not to hold "the seats in chamber diagram" (P14226 is correct), but to hold the maps with electoral results, instead to create this new property?. P1846 was create to display mapped information, has been widely used for maps of election results, and it is what your examples for the new property contains.

"I wonder why do not use distribution map (P1846) not to hold "the seats in chamber diagram" (P14226 is correct), but to hold the maps with electoral results" Because that would be nonsensical according to both the name and the description of the property
"P1846 was create to display mapped information, has been widely used for maps of election results" No, you are completely wrong. The property explicitly states that it was shown to showcase the "distribution of item on a mapped area". Election result maps do not exist for the purpose of showing the geographic distribution of every single individual vote casted during an election in a mapped area. They exist for the purpose of showing the voting result for a given subject in specific electoral units or subnational administrative territorial entities
Because if the choice is between using a property that sounds vaguely correct but really isn't vs. proposing a new property that fits what you are trying to do, 96% of users will do the former instead of the later. That is not an argument in favor of the practice. It's an argument that this property should have been made much, much sooner ago before the poor previous modeling became an ingrained habbit for editors Trade (talk) 00:16, 7 April 2026 (UTC)reply
Thanks, @Trade. I agree with your explanation.

Well since both election result maps and apportionment diagram are awkwardly mixed together we will have to use both properties to display the same file Trade (talk) 00:04, 7 April 2026 (UTC)reply
@Trade OK. Thanks, Amadalvarez (talk) 06:19, 8 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I am concerned that this might be a map, a digram or a bar chart, and the proposal is muddled over its terminology. And is it to be used for individual seats or assemblies. Clarification needed explaing why similar existing properties are not suitable. Vicarage (talk) 16:26, 7 April 2026 (UTC)reply
Which part of the proposal do you find unclear Trade (talk) 18:30, 7 April 2026 (UTC)reply
concerns not addressed, so  Oppose Vicarage (talk) 05:40, 15 April 2026 (UTC)reply
What concern? I asked a simply question and you refused to give an answer Trade (talk) 23:10, 18 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I thought my original comment made my objections clear. I still do. Vicarage (talk) 06:12, 19 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I think my property is perfectly clear. So... Trade (talk) 17:28, 19 April 2026 (UTC)reply
@Vicarage I'm not sure if your discussion with @Trade is about the property proposal or about the doubts grammar. Anyway.
As I undestand the meaning of this proposal is:
  • Show territory maps for full (or specific local) election results. Actually, all examples are maps !.
  • It may be expressed in vots, in %, or in seats by territory.
    • IMHO it also could be a comparative results among electoral results, being with barchart or similar
  • In any case should not show a diagram with final structure of chamber derivated from election results. For this kind of graph we have apportionment diagram (P14226).

Thanks for the explanation. Do you agree with this summary, @Trade? Does this help to clarify things, @Vicarage? Yirba (talk) 17:41, 11 May 2026 (UTC)reply
Support now proposal renamed election result map, and if it is clearly restricted to only maps, not any other way of representing data. Vicarage (talk) 17:50, 11 May 2026 (UTC)reply
I agree with changing name proposal to election result map to be more specific. Amadalvarez (talk) 19:14, 15 May 2026 (UTC)reply
