Motivation
[edit]We have several properties for designating which hand a human prefers, but we don't have a way to designate which hands a tool is designed to be used with. Many types of tools come in left-handed/right-handed versions; e.g. computer mice, musical instruments, scissors/cutting tools, golf clubs, etc.
Another option instead of adding this property would be to expand the scope of handedness (P552) (which currently can only be used on humans/characters). I don't love this option, as there are some handedness descriptors that make sense for a tool but not for a human. A tool can be one-handed or two-handed, but that shouldn't be tagged on a human. Humans can generally use a tool of any handedness (and if they can't, that should be modelled with medical condition (P1050), not handedness (P552)).
I listed six 'allowed values' that I think make for a reasonable one-of constraint (Q21510859) list, but I'd be interested to hear other opinions. –IagoQnsi (talk) 23:00, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
Discussion

Support This is very cool. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 19:52, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- Could this be expanded to actions like sports moves? For example two-handed backhand (Q14420068). Seems like a similar modeling issue. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 01:02, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- Something like that could definitely fit in theory, if there exists a tool in some sport that is designed for a specific move. In every racket sport I've played, you can hit any type of shot with any racket, so I don't know that it would make sense for two-handed backhand (Q14420068) in particular. But I could definitely imagine there may be some sports implement out there that I haven't thought of that is specialized to a particular handedness. –IagoQnsi (talk) 01:37, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
