Motivation

[edit]

External identifier for an athlete on https://trackbot.toolforge.org/ncaadb, a track and field collegiate results database maintained on WMF Toolforge that I helped create. At least 4,262 athletes in the database can be linked to existing Wikidata items, and that count is just for the ones with enwiki sitelinks.

Other databases either don't assign athlete IDs (USTFCCCA, Track and Field News) or don't maintain historical pre-2000s data (TFRRS athlete ID (P5120)). From this identifier follows the schools that each athlete was associated with. It would be helpful to have an external identifier to link athlete items with their schools and college teams with their athletes - currently there are thousands of Wikidata items for athletes and Olympians that have no linked data to their NCAA careers or schools attended. --Habst (talk) 19:08, 22 August 2026 (UTC)reply
