Motivation

[edit]

Sketchfab is the leading hosting service for 3D computer models, acting in a similar way to YouTube, with a mixture of private and commercial users, free and paid content, open and restrictive licences. While much of the content is of imaginary worlds of little notability, it also has a strong element of cultural heritage relevant to Wikidata, scans of architecture, machines and museum objects, and models of product designs. As well as private users, much content is uploaded by heritage bodies to showcase their research. WD already refers to many 3D models using described by source (P1343), but there is confusion over the 3 entity types used, models, channels and users, and whether items should be indexed by the hosting service, or the creator, which may be a notable organisation or an un-notable individual. This property, and its related proposals for models and channels should clarify the usage.

Note that not only can a creator define their own channels, users can create channels featuring other users work, as an informal categorisation system.

I'd envisage the property only being used directly on items, not as a qualifier Vicarage (talk) 10:22, 21 December 2025 (UTC)reply
