Motivation
[edit]The Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) has certified over 3,000 open source hardware projects, each receiving a unique identifier that serves as official proof of compliance with the Open Source Hardware Definition. However, most of these certified projects lack representation in Wikidata, and those that do exist cannot be properly linked to their official certification status. This property would address the lack of information about the projects on Wikidata, considering the OSHWA identifier provides authoritative verification that a project meets open source hardware standards, which is valuable information for researchers, educators, and the maker community. Furthermore, having OSHWA identifiers in Wikidata would enable queries to find all certified open source hardware projects.

Discussion
[edit]- Hi @ASL 96:, thanks for your proposal! I have made some edits to the proposal template, please have a look. One example is still missing, since I don't see an item "Field Ready Umbilical Cord Clamp"; please substitute with a valid item, as in the two other examples, to complete the proposal. Thanks, --Epìdosis 09:36, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for the edits! I'm new to this and I would need more guidance on what does it mean? There are not many OSHWA-certified projects on Wikidata, so I don't know what I could add instead. Let me know how I can edit it accordingly! ASL 96 (talk) 12:26, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @ASL 96:, you can just create manually one item for an OSHWA-certified project (e.g. "Field Ready Umbilical Cord Clamp") so as to have 3 examples of existing items and to complete thus the proposal box. Epìdosis 15:41, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Epìdosis: Thanks for the feedback. I am collaborating with this new user @ASL 96:. We are both doing a research project with Open Source Hardware Association (Q27926243) and trying to find some way to bring open hardware projects and the Wikimedia sort of openness together. We talked with someone from OSHWA and asked them to name the three most popular, best known, most useful, easiest to understand, most discussed open hardware projects. It is difficult to determine all those things, but the three examples here are what they recommended. As ASL mentioned, OSHWA certifies open hardware projects by confirming their openness, making a public database record confirming the open hardware license of a project, and connecting their database to other project information. I am not sure what all we can do, but we want to do something for open hardware in Wikidata. We are also building out the data model in Wikidata:WikiProject Informatics/Hardware. I hope this helps. I appreciate anything you can do to advance or support this proposal, and ask if you have questions. Bluerasberry (talk) 19:33, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Sure, it is a very good project; the proposal is now complete, so of course I
Support the creation of the property, which will be an excellent source for the data you will import. --Epìdosis 20:56, 17 July 2025 (UTC)

- @ArthurPSmith: Hi, I encountered a small issue about this property: we specified that the OSHWA identifier should be alphanumeric and in caps, e.g. "US000203". However, for the links to work, they have to have a lower caps, e.g. us000203. Could we update it? Thank you ASL 96 (talk) 15:34, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
- @ASL 96: Huh - that's why it's good to link the examples with the formatter URL in the proposal. Usually I check that. Anyway you can always adjust the usage and the constraints on the property page now that it exists, I don't think it's been around long enough that anybody would object to that.
