Motivation

[edit]

The NZPCN has changed their URL contruction from numeric identifiers to a string-based slug referencing the taxon name of each item. The situation with the change to these urls has been discussed by the community extensively on the NZPCN ID property's talk page.

These slugs/ids resolving to these urls have been updated in the Wikidata Property NZPCN ID NZPCN ID (P7496) by updating the formatter url and also by updating these values via an openrefine batch edit. However the previous numeric ids remain useful as historic identifiers and should be retained in the Wikidata item: they may occur in older citations, datasets and retaining these ids offers a way to reconcile records identified by the previous NZPCN identifier system. Additionally retaining these ids offers security should these urls ever up changing back; these ids are likely still retained in the NZPCN records and are just not viewable from the front-end of the website.

In short, this property is proposed to preserve the former legacy NZPCN identifiers to exist in the Wikidata item alongside and without interference with the current NZPCN ID (P7496) values. The previous values will be migrated to this property via an openrefine batch edit by myself. The project is all ready to go - I just need a property to put the data with. Thank you!  Support - This property proposal and the work being undertaken is extremely timely as I and another editor are undertaking outreach with the NZPCN in October. To have this all sorted by then would be fabulous! A huge thank you for undertaking this work! - Ambrosia10 (talk) 05:32, 22 September 2026 (UTC)reply

Support - I am so pleased the new NZPCN IDs are now in Wikidata, and I think it is a very good idea to create a new property proposal for the legacy IDs. They are different things (strings vs numbers) and the old IDs may prove useful to retain. Thank you so much! - Stitchbird2 (talk)
