Planned useTo identify the public Google Search profile associated with a Wikidata entity. Google Search profiles have public URLs using the pattern https://profile.google.com/@handle. This property would allow Wikidata to link directly to those profiles using the handle as an external identifier, analogous to dedicated identifiers for profiles on other major web platforms.

Motivation

[edit]

Google has introduced public Search profiles for people and organizations. Each profile has a public URL using a handle in the form https://profile.google.com/@handle. Examples include NBC (https://profile.google.com/@nbc), The New York Times (https://profile.google.com/@nytimes), ABC News (https://profile.google.com/@abcnews), The Wall Street Journal (https://profile.google.com/@wsj), the Miami Herald (https://profile.google.com/@miamiherald), and Tucker Carlson (@tuckercarlson).

A dedicated external-identifier property would allow these profiles to be represented consistently and would provide a formatter URL directly to the public profile. While website account on (P553) with website username or ID (P554) can represent accounts generically, Google Search profiles now have a defined public handle and URL scheme, similar to other services for which Wikidata maintains dedicated external-identifier properties.

Google documents Search profiles and their public URLs here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/search-profiles

I moved this from generic to authority control as it seems a better fit. Also, Facebook username, Instagram username, X username, YouTube channel ID, LinkedIn IDs, Reddit username, Mastodon address, etc. are grouped as properties related to social-networking services, and it seems that this Google Search Profile handle fits within the existing social networking service organizational convention as Google's product acts to organize and index a person/organization's social profiles although it isn't literally itself a social network.
