Apple Maps place id

[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Place

Motivation

[edit]

Based on the discussions on Property talk:P10046#Two sets of IDs, I'm proposing the property split of place id and AUID from a single property, Apple Maps "auid" identifier (P10046) (which was created only for AUID). -- Winston Sung (talk) 03:32, 29 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Discussion

[edit]

Gemini said:" An identifier for a place in Apple Maps (referred to as a Place ID or MKMapItemIdentifier) can change over time. Apple explicitly notes in its documentation that the identifier for a point of interest may change. To account for this, Apple Maps provides mechanisms to handle identifier changes and data consistency: Alternate Identifiers: Map objects include an alternateIdentifiers property in MapKit (or alternateIds in MapKit JS and the Apple Maps Server API). This property supplies a set of alternative or historical identifiers linked to the same location. Database Maintenance: Because identifiers can evolve or be updated by Apple's mapping systems, developers are advised to check these alternate identifiers when maintaining unique collections or databases of places to prevent duplicates. Resolution Behavior: A previously saved Place ID will typically continue resolving to the most recent information for that location unless the business or landmark permanently closes down or ceases to exist entirely." We need to consider whether this level of stability means its can work in WD, and how we can ensure good practices is enshrined here. Vicarage (talk) 07:37, 4 August 2026 (UTC) reply

Support All of the above is true, but it pertains to MapKit development. The discussion boils down to a simple separation of two separate entities: Apple Map ID (https://maps.apple.com/place?auid=) and Apple Place ID (https://maps.apple.com/place?place-id=). For some reason, they were mistakenly combined into a single property Apple Maps "auid" identifier, and this combined state doesn't work correctly when using Place ID. I propose explicitly eliminating the incorrect use of Place ID as an Apple Maps "auid" identifier property and creating a new, separate property for Apple Place ID. This will fix the error and eliminate the ambiguity that exists in this case (in property P10046). We are currently in the final stages of creating a new, separate property for Apple Place ID. ―Applsdev (talk) (contribs) 08:47, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

  • I've manually replaced all usages that I can found with a place-id value in an auid property/qualifier/references/statements using the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS) to find, approximately 300 ~ 400 values. Please fix those if I missed some of the usages. -- Winston Sung (talk) 18:39, 20 August 2026 (UTC)reply
