About Japanese place name articles

[edit]

You linked the Japanese place name articles I created on Wikipedia to Wikidata. At that time, you classified them as Q3957, but it was incorrect. They should have been classified as Q5327369, Q65948724, or Q424857. Please be aware of this if you intend to continue linking Japanese place name articles to Wikidata. ぴゅう太 (talk) 05:42, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@ぴゅう太 Thanks for the reminder! I was able to put Q5327369 and Q65948724 on most of the items I imported, but for some of them it wasn't clear from the article at first glance which one they were, but it was clear that they were some kind of town. Please excuse the inconvenience. Mcampany (talk) 13:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@ぴゅう太 I just ran a search so that I could clean these up, and I noticed you took care of them all already. Thank you very much, I really appreciate it. Mcampany (talk) 14:51, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wiktionary redirects

[edit]

Hi, please note that Wiktionary redirects (ja:Category:ウィクショナリーへのソフトリダイレクト) do not meet notability because soft redirects are excluded per Wikidata:Notability/Exclusion criteria. Please avoid adding them to Wikidata. Thank you. Samoasambia ✎ 23:22, 13 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Will do! I usually import based on categories in Japanese Wikipedia that I can cleanly map to instance of (P31) human (Q5), film (Q11424), or other things like that, but it's possible a soft redirect got mixed in there. Feel free to nominate any soft redirects I've imported for deletion. Mcampany (talk) 00:41, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Project Data round tripping meetings

[edit]

Hi, as promised during the WikiData Project Days on Saturday, I am invinting you to the meeting of Wikidata:WikiProject Data round-tripping. Thank you for joining us.

The next meeting is scheduled on July 21st probably in the afternoon (some of the users will join together in Paris for Wikimania). See this page for more information. Would you like to discuss your work? We can already insert it in the planned agenda.

If you are not available for that specific date in July, we can arrange a dedicated meeting at a later date that works for you, as we have done with other stakeholders. Alexmar983 (talk) 21:55, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Alex! I can join the next meeting on July 21st, and hopefully future meetings as well. I'd appreciate if WP:P244 maintenance could be on the next agenda so that I can share my findings and get your feedback before I share a poster about it at IFLA in August. If that's not possible, like if you all decide to have an in-person meeting while you're in Paris, I'm happy to report back afterward. Mcampany (talk) 15:28, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello again, Alex! When you know what time the meeting will be, can you let me know? I was planning to do this call from a bus station in New York City, but I just realized that the bus is very likely to arrive at 16:40 Paris time. If the meeting is held earlier or later than your usual 16:00 CEST, I should be able to call in without having to suddenly mute myself in the middle while I get off the bus. If not, hopefully I can see you all at the next one. Mcampany (talk) 16:59, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think we might define the exact time slot this 12th of July. We can keep your feedback in mind, I suppose. --Alexmar983 (talk) 16:38, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'd appreciate that! If the timing doesn't work out, that's all right too. There's always next time. Mcampany (talk) 17:30, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
With @Alexmar983: and colleagues we have discussed together and, since there will be pre-Wikimania tours in Paris in the early afternoon (at the National Library!), we cannot schedule before 16:00 CEST; which would be your preferred time later? When is your bus trip over? Epìdosis 16:27, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
A trip to the National Library! How exciting, I hope you all have a wonderful time. :) The bus is supposed to arrive in NYC at 16:30 CEST, so 17:00 CEST would be ideal since I can call in from the bus station and won't have to find a quiet place to call in later. If you're not sure if you'll be back by then, I can also make a later time work--I can think of a couple of quiet spots where I can call in that are near the places my sister wants to visit.
I truly apologize for the inconvenience; when I agreed to attend the next meeting I thought I would be working on the 21st. Again, if we can't find a good time I'm happy to meet with you all another day, maybe during your August meeting? Mcampany (talk) 19:41, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
We confirm 17:00 CEST.--Alexmar983 (talk) 10:29, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great, see you then! Mcampany (talk) 12:58, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

William J. Cobb

[edit]

Hello! I was wondering if you could help find additional information on https://www.idref.fr/297933353, that I have just separated from Jelani Cobb (Q8013536). He doesn't seem to have been singled out in the LoC, but perhaps you know some archives where I could investigate? Thanks, --Thomas Kerboul (BGE) (talk) 06:06, 3 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Thomas! This is a tough one. I really couldn't find much of anything while searching. On page xiii of the 1975 edition of "Interviewing in social research", Hyman writes that Cobb died before the new edition came out, but doesn't provide a specific date. I couldn't find anything that would help to narrow down to a more specific date, especially since I couldn't find anything that says what the "J." stands for. Mcampany (talk) 15:37, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! This lead me to investigate further and I have found a small necrology in https://doi.org/10.1080/00031305.1960.10501112 that I quote below in full:

William J. Cobb, Vice-president of Datatab, was killed in an automobile accident on July 23. 1960. Mr. Cobb had been in the field of sampling for twenty years, first working at the Works Projects Administration and the Census Bureau. Later, he was chief sampling technician for the National Housing Agency. In 1948, working for SCAP in Tokyo, he redesigned the Japanese probability samples used for population, labor force and establishment surveys. After a period as a consulting statistician in private practice he joined W. R. Simmons and Associates, Inc., becoming Research Director. In 1959, he became Vice-president of Datatab, Inc., a market research organization of New York City.

I have created William J. Cobb (Q140454158): statistician (-1960) for him. --Thomas Kerboul (BGE) (talk) 06:19, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's an incredible find! Good work. Mcampany (talk) 14:28, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

GND duplicates

[edit]

For quick reporting of GND duplicates you can try:

importScript( 'User:Epìdosis/GND duplicates report.js' );

It generates the message ready for copy-paste into de:Wikipedia:GND/Fehlermeldung. Best, --Epìdosis 18:56, 1 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much! I'll have to look more carefully through your commons.js page for more helpful tools, haha. :) Mcampany (talk) 19:45, 1 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
