Deleting of information
editWhy do you - the person who is known for fighting for WorldCat Identities (Wikidata:Properties for deletion/P7859), fighting for keeping of redirects etc. - are now, since you are back, systematically delete information about GND check? --Kolja21 (talk) 16:17, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Because GND statements with no content have no added value for me. Either a correct GND identifier is entered or not. The topic cannot be compared with valid WorldCat identifiers. --Gymnicus (talk) 16:57, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- This info doesn't need to have any value for you. It is used by librarians. If a person should have a GND experienced users either enter the GND or note the retrieval date with the comment "No value". This is common practice in library catalogs, in Wikipedia (de:Vorlage:Normdaten: GNDCheck) and Wikidata (Property talk:P227/human/wanted/no value). --Kolja21 (talk) 17:36, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- But we are not in a library or on Wikipedia. This kind of thing has no place here because it has no added value. --Gymnicus (talk) 18:11, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
--Kolja21 (talk) 19:12, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- You want to block someone who removes invalid statements? Then have fun with it. Because I won't let that intimidate me. Statements without added value can be deleted and that includes GND statements with no value. PS: I have no idea why you're switching to German. --Gymnicus (talk) 22:43, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
--Kolja21 (talk) 22:54, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- In order to, as can be read at Vorlage:Normdaten, request the GND and its employees to create a data object for this person, organization or concept. But that is not Wikidata's job, especially since Wikidata, unlike Wikipedia, considers that a GND identifier makes a dataobject notable. So what this means is that by adding a GND statement without a value, Wikidata is asking the GND itself to make the data object relevant. And that is a fatal mistake and undermines the notability criteria. --Gymnicus (talk) 23:17, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- So users want to aks librarians to create a GND? Possible. But the key point is that you can tell from the retrieval date when the last check was made to see if a GND is present. If this crucial information is missing, users will make the same query again and again. Therefore, we use this method known from libraries in Wikipedia and Wikidata. And this has been the case for years. --Kolja21 (talk) 23:39, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi! I agree that Wikidata contains some data that have no added value and can be removed (cf. Wikidata:WikiProject Redundancy with many possible examples) and that we need to establish criteria for the use of novalue for external identifiers (a minimum requirement should be retrieved (P813)); for this I opened a general discussion in Wikidata talk:Identifiers#Novalue for missing IDs that I invite you to join.
- At the same time, I think that external IDs (particularly authority file IDs) can be usefully used with novalue to mark the absence of a certain entity in it, as @Kolja21: said; the practice of indicating not found in is common both to various authority files and to Wikidata (through not found in (P9660), which has more than 16k uses, and through novalues, which are used more than 85k times). In the specific case of GND, referenced novalues have also been used in a workflow for new ID creation for nearly two years (Property talk:P227/human/wanted/no value).
- So I would propose to discuss a general guideline in the aforementioned discussion and in the meanwhile restore the novalues removed through batches 1739386767371, 1739387384964, 1739388581746, 1739389305282, 1739390362360; since there seems to be already consensus on the necessity of retrieved (P813) references, I think 1739385849294 is uncontroversial. Thanks and good evening! Epìdosis 21:09, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
- So if you have no objections to the plan I proposed, I will undo the 5 aformentioned batches tomorrow, so that it will be easy, when the discussion at Wikidata talk:Identifiers#Novalue for missing IDs will reach a consensus, either convert them to a different form (e.g. on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) or not found in (P9660)) or keep them as they are. Thanks for participating in the discussion there! Epìdosis 09:23, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- I have finished undoing the 5 batches. Epìdosis 09:35, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

P642
edit"Errors" is not an accurate way to describe the flag created by a suggestion constraint. As the name implies, the constraint is there to suggest to editors that the statement is probably wrong, which in the case of P642 is absolutely true. Almost all statements using P642 should instead be using another property that has already been identified, and the constraint explains where to find that. A little triangle doesn't hurt anyone. I'd appreciate you putting it back.
Also, when you revert, it's courteous to use the revert button. Swpb (talk) 22:31, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
Since you were actively editing after I posted the above, I will assume you've read it and chose not to respond. I'll give it another day, then I'll assume you are fine with me restoring the constraint. Swpb (talk) 14:56, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- For me, the word "error" perfectly describes what the restriction you added will cause. And I still disagree with the idea that such errors should disrupt users' editing. Especially since the implementation of your plan to abolish the property P642 (P642) is still extremely immature in many respects, which is why, in my opinion, such a restriction is completely excessive at this point in time. --Gymnicus (talk) 13:32, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- Are you aware of the RfC to deprecate, currently sitting at 12–0? You don't have to change your opinion, but you might want to consider if this fight over an icon you don't like seeing is worth your valuable time, considering we are on the verge of a strong mandate to add the constraint without the "suggestion" status. Swpb (talk) 13:48, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- By the way, if there is a particular group of statements that are giving you heartburn, I'd be glad to help you identify a replacement property and migrate them so you won't have to look at the constraint badge. Swpb (talk) 14:19, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- First of all, it's a shame that you're only now pointing the RfC out to me. Because it's very, very clear. Therefore, a blocking attitude isn't appropriate. So I've thought of a way to avoid being bothered by this property restriction. So I've reverted my own edit. Gymnicus (talk) 21:23, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

editHi. Worauf fußt deine Aussage, was Korrekt ist? VG Kawona67 (talk) 09:55, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
Dresdner
editYou are making a mess on Wikidata. We lost all the automatic categories on the italian Wikipedia, because of your edit. The team in club seasons of Wikidata is wrong. Can you please fix it? Season of the club should have the element Q299777, not the one you put instead (Q121435939). OTHravens 7 (talk) 21:53, 3 April 2025 (UTC)
- The seasonal articles refer to the Dresdner SC first team and not the volleyball department. Therefore, my edits are completely accurate and the current status is not a mess. --Gymnicus (talk) 07:21, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- The articles from all the wikipedia pages for the volleyball team are linked on Q299777. You merged all the articles I created for the seasons of the volleyball team - such as Dresdner Sportclub 1898 2023-2024 (pallavolo femminile) - with yours and put the element Q121435939 as team which the seasons belongs to; now I have all the seasons of Dresdner volleyball team without their category on the italian Wikipedia, because of this. We need to fix this. Could you do that? You could easily merge Q121435939 with Q299777 and to have the problem solved. I have no idea how to merge articles on Wikidata. OTHravens 7 (talk) 15:29, 6 April 2025 (UTC)
Why this? The item about the women's volleyball team is the other one? Or maybe the could be merged? --Superchilum(talk to me!) 11:47, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Superchilum: The data object for the first volleyball team of the Dresdner SC is the data object Dresdner SC (Q121435939). The data object Dresdner SC (Q299777) describes the volleyball department of the club, which includes the first team, the second team (notable for having participated twice in the DVV Cup), and the youth teams. Therefore, the two data objects are different.
- I do have a suggested solution to the current problem. My suggestion would be to add both the data object Dresdner SC (Q121435939) and the data object Dresdner SC (Q299777) to the seasonal items via the property season of club or team (P5138). This should then make the category visible again for your seasonal items in the Italian wikipedia.
- Personally, I would mark the statement season of club or team (P5138)Dresdner SC (Q121435939) as preferred. But I think that would lead to the same mistake again. --Gymnicus (talk) 12:09, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- I will try your solution. I'm still not sure if having separate objects on Wikidata for the various teams of club is correct, because - at least on Wikipedia - the page of the club (in this case Dresdner Sportclub 1898) refers about the club as a whole, not only the first team. Also second teams of clubs become relevant only when they play the top league of their country in volleyball (with the need to have on Wikipedia a distinct page from the one of the first team, which is what happened with Uralochka when they had like 2 or 3 teams in Superleague, fox example). OTHravens 7 (talk) 13:10, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, it works. I added the other object and linked to each others all the seasonal objects. Thank you. 😊 OTHravens 7 (talk) 13:33, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

editAfter reading your talk page and this absurd somewhat editwarry reasoning: Please try to realign your work on Wikidata with established consensus and sound logic. --Emu (talk) 20:44, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
--Kolja21 (talk) 03:13, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

--Emu (talk) 09:16, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your accurate explanation to Kolja21 and I would also ask you to finally put a stop to his constant demands for a ban, even though there's absolutely no justification for them. His demands are based solely on his dislike for me. --Gymnicus (talk) 11:28, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- As Emu correctly pointed out, my edit was covered by the regulations. Furthermore, I couldn't and still can't tell from the statement you linked how it proves the correct spelling. Because the statement has nothing to do with the name at all. It may be that the correct spelling is shown in the source. But then you should also use this source to prove a statement like name in native language (P1559)Wilhelm Gröne so that it's clear from the statement.
- I've done that in the meantime, and I've also added the misspelling. For painters, aliases like "franz stuck" for Franz von Stuck (Q45006) or "franc snyders" for Frans Snyders (Q29231) are allowed. But if I add a misspelling to a data object here, then that's the biggest crime of all. Sorry, but I don't understand that. --Gymnicus (talk) 12:12, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

- To begin with: Your second edit to the data object Q133844267 sparked the edit war. I had absolutely nothing to do with it. So, my friendly advice: Refrain from such actions, or you'll lose your admin rights. That would be a real shame, because you've always impressed me very positively as an admin.
- On the subject: You wrote about “irgendwelchen Fremddatenbanken”. Well, for me, the Catalog of the German National Library (Q23833686) isn't just any external database. It's the most important external database in Germany for literature, and it sees itself as such. That's why I think it's important to document when the full-time staff there have messed up. That's clearly the case here, and this error leads to further errors in the databases of other libraries. Therefore, I consider it more than justified to document this error here in Wikidata. --Gymnicus (talk) 11:19, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

- @Emu: Gymnicus has continued to edit war, most recently at athletics (Q542) — Dcflyer (talk) 05:03, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Dcflyer Yeah, this modeling doesn’t really make any sense and I personally don't think that we should assume good faith at this point. Since Gymnicus no doubt will somehow manage to make this about me, it might be better to alert my colleagues at WD:AN. --Emu (talk) 09:17, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Dcflyer, Emu: What kind of nonsense is this? My edits to the data object athletics (Q542) are all based on the content of the page Help:Ranking. There, in the section "Usage" and subsection "Deprecated rank", it says under advantages: "it allows other users to know not to re-add the value to the item." And that's exactly why I keep adding this statement. If you get banned for using the help page, I don't know which rules the administrators are referring to. --Gymnicus (talk) 09:35, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Gymnicus, please don’t insult your own intelligence just to spite people who have allegedly wronged you. You know very well that the statement you keep pushing doesn’t allow other users to know not to re-add the value to the item. It was you who entered this statement back in 2021 (for some reason) and I trust that you won’t forget about it. There are no other users you have to warn about the dangers of copying approximately-ish matchings of subject headings in other databases. --Emu (talk) 09:57, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'd like to reiterate: The help page clearly allows this disapproved statement to remain in the article, as it also provides a reference. As long as there is no Wikidata policy page stating that disapproved identifiers can be deleted, I continue to support this position. --Gymnicus (talk) 10:13, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, then let me reiterate as well: The talk page simply does not say what you think it does. Also, as I’ve said before, your actions clearly are against established consensus. No amount of cherrypicking bits and pieces from help pages (than aren’t even policy in a strict sense) will make that go away. --Emu (talk) 12:04, 30 May 2025 (UTC)

I removed this statement because it was redundant to the parent club (P831) statement already on the item. Swpb (talk) 20:25, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- In this particular case, this is not the case. The property parent club (P831) links, as the name suggests, to the parent club Dresdner SC (Q300355). In contrast, the property parent organization or unit (P749) links to the parent volleyball department, Dresdner SC (Q299777). These are two different things and therefore not redundant.
- Furthermore, in certain cases, as in this case, deletion may also result in "errors". See Property:P355. Gymnicus (talk) 20:40, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
northernmost point of Germany
editI deleted a wrong coordinates of northernmost point (P1332) statement in Germany (Q183). You rolled this change back. Why should we keep wrong Data? Yuriklim (talk) 15:20, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- So, in principle, I don't have a problem with deleting false statements without a reference. That is certainly the case here. But since the given point indicates the northernmost point of Germany, excluding the islands belonging to Germany, I consider this a statement that can be left standing with a disapproved ranking even without a reference. --Gymnicus (talk) 18:38, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
Speedskatingnews.info skater ID
editHello Gymnicus. The speedskatingnews.info-database P3694 includes to many persons that are not really speedskaters by profession but has skated a few races as youth or as a sidesport, so i think it is not necessary to demand that all wikidata-entries with a profile from the speedskating.info-database must include p106 = Q10866633 and P641 = Q192431. What do you think ? Best regards Migrant (talk) 23:40, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

--Gymnicus (talk) 20:38, 17 August 2025 (UTC)

- In the specific case of Android, there is currently no longer an error. However, the other examples mentioned do still have one. Further examples include: “Instagram (Instagram Inc.)” and Bundesliga (Bundesliga 1) --Gymnicus (talk) 15:51, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

--Gymnicus (talk) 12:40, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
Deutsche Welle
editHello, we are currently maintaining the Deutsche Welle entry on Wikidata to ensure its accuracy for machine-readability and downstream data use. We have noticed that you have made numerous edits to this item, including changes to information that is not publicly available and is being provided directly by Deutsche Welle. As we assume you are not acting on behalf of Deutsche Welle, we ask that you please refrain from making further edits to this Wikidata item. If you believe any of the data is incorrect, you are welcome to raise the issue on the item’s discussion page so it can be reviewed and addressed appropriately. Thank you for your understanding. DWaaron (talk) 10:30, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
- Based on your comment and your username, it appears your posts are paid edits. This must be disclosed, which hasn't been done in your case. Therefore, I am informing the two German-speaking administrators Emu and MisterSynergy. --Gymnicus (talk) Gymnicus (talk) 14:40, 15 January 2026 (UTC)

LG Labant (talk) 23:05, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

Gymnicus (talk) 11:48, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Official website
editHello. A lot of Wikipedia versions (such us the italian, take the official website from Wikidata). When you take off the website from the items of the leagues, you leave them all without websites on wikipedia. LOVB 2025 and 2026, MLV 2026... they are all without their volleystation official website now. Volleystation works as official website of their seasons. OTHravens 7 (talk) 14:47, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- Volleystation is not the official website for the seasons. The Polish company merely hosts the statistics, nothing more. Therefore, the entry regarding the property official website is incorrect and should be changed to reflect the property described at URL. I have, in the meantime, gone ahead and made this change again. To ensure that the "Web links" sections do not remain empty, I have manually added the links to the articles. --Gymnicus (talk) 12:50, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- Volleystation and Data project host game results, players' bios and stats for any specific tournament. They work like real websites for those leagues that pay them to host all the info of their competitions. That makes them de facto official websites. Sultanlar Ligi has its volleystation page, Turkish Cup has its volleystation page, Efeler Ligi has its volleystation page and so on... Same for the college teams: they are part of the same structure and for example https://smumustangs.com/sports/womens-volleyball is the de facto official website of Southern Methodist University Women's Volleyball. Same as Galatasaray men's volleyball, men' basketball, women's volleyball and so on. If you want to use the property official website only for olympic games and sports events like this (where you can find on top of the page "this is the official website of xxx"), you lose 90% of the official websites in all the sport pages. Taking off the official websites is making a mess for those wikipedia versions (like the italian) who take them from wikidata. And when you put the official website the way you did on the pages, there is a bot moving them to wikidata on the official website property. OTHravens 7 (talk) 09:27, 17 May 2026 (UTC)

organization
editThere are many organizations in Wikidata that are not groups of humans, ranging from General Motors (Q81965) to United Nations (Q1065). So it is definitely not the case that organization (Q43229) is a subclass of group of humans (Q16334295). See also https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Talk:Q43229#not_a_group_of_humans Peter F. "Preßburg" als deutscher Name

--Gymnicus (talk) 12:42, 12 July 2026 (UTC)

editHallo Gymnikus, warum hast du soviel Versionen zurückgesetzt? Lichtenberg
editHello Gymnicus, there is the Lichtenberg district and the Lichtenberg Ortsteil. The district is therefore the next administrative unit. Same for Marzahn-Hellersdorf. It is the administrative unit. Marzahn is the Ortsteil. Please do not keep deleting the correct administrative unit. Gruß Singlespeedfahrer (talk) 05:07, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Administrative units
editHi, I'm not exactly sure what kind of problems you're having with my edits. Regarding administrative units: The most specific administrative units are the districts in Berlin (the higher-level unit is Berlin, and then probably Germany). That's how it's entered in many thousands of items. Similarly, someone could enter Germany as the preferred administrative unit. Best regards Singlespeedfahrer (talk) 09:56, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- To support my assumption, P131 states:
- "Verwendungshinweise
--Gymnicus (talk) 11:12, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
Reverting
editHello. What are you doing? [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] These items are about the Latin phrases, common to all languages. Of course the "mul" item can be the Latin phrase itself. Could you please revert your changes? Adam78 (talk) 16:43, 30 August 2026 (UTC)
- Don't bother; I've reverted them myself. I hope you'll be more careful next time. Adam78 (talk) 10:56, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- While I still don't consider these "mul" labels necessary, I have no desire for lengthy discussions. At the very least, you didn't revert the edit at health center, and that is what matters most to me. --Gymnicus (talk) 11:01, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- I have been thinking about what you wrote for some days but I still don't understand why you'd prefer non-German-speakers to see Q135806546 instead of Gesundheitszentrum. Do you know that only the Q number is displayed in Wikidata for all those people who didn't set German as their primary language? (At least as long as there is no "mul" value given.)
- Even if they don't speak German, Gesundheitszentrum may be more meaningful for them as a label than Q135806546, as people might recognize Zentrum at the end, which looks like center, centro, centrum etc. How can a code be more useful for any human than a text that might recall something meaningful?
- Actually, it's common for realia not to be translated but preserved in their original form. Gesundheitszentrum may be one of them, with a uniform name across languages, as long as it has no exact and widespread translation. Adam78 (talk) 23:05, 2 September 2026 (UTC)

Seasons
editThe 2026 season doesn't exist. Club volleyball seasons are all 20xx-20yy. 2026 MLV season belongs to the 2025-2026 season. Please don't move from 2025-26 to 2026, because it is wrong. OTHravens 7 (talk) 10:26, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
- The MLV season currently takes place within a single calendar year rather than spanning two, as is the case with European leagues. Therefore, no statement Q138843480time period (P2348)2025–2026 one-year-period (Q53389789) is required for these data object. --Gymnicus (talk) 17:13, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter. According to the FIVB rules all leagues must run in 20xx-20yy. For example in Puerto Rico during the 2025-2026 we have LVSM 2025 and LVSF 2026, because the leagues are shorter. They can even last just one month, but from october to may they belong to a 20xx-20yy season. 2026 Major League Volleyball belongs to the 2025-26 season. It's the same for LOVB: 2026 League One Volleyball belongs to the 2025-26 season, while the third season will be called LOVB 2026-27, because with more teams involved it will last a little bit more and start in december. So please don't remove the season statements from wikidata. Thank you. OTHravens 7 (talk) 17:40, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
