From Wikidata

This account belongs to Victor Ketom, founder of STASIUM, an independent institute for expanded arts based in Bangkok (stasium.art).

Disclosure of affiliation: the data I add here comes from work on that project, and the project uses open data in return. No one pays me for these edits and no edit promotes STASIUM. Nothing about the project itself is added to Wikidata.

Why

[edit]

I am building a public map of how art institutions actually work: which venues open careers, which open calls charge artists nothing. It is aimed at artists outside the usual centres, who have no way to read that landscape today. That map is only as good as the open record it rests on, so what I take from open museum data I give back here rather than keeping it in a private database.

What I add

[edit]

Statements of has works in the collection (P6379) (has works in the collection) linking creators to museums, taken from the museums' own open-access datasets. At present: the Metropolitan Museum of Art Open Access dataset (CC0).

Every statement carries a reference: a direct link to the specific object in the museum's own collection, plus the retrieval date of the frozen dataset snapshot the edit was based on.

How a candidate is accepted

[edit]
  • The museum's own Artist Role field for that position must be exactly Artist. The same field also lists sitters, printers and subjects, and taking the wrong position would credit works to the person depicted.
  • Any attribution prefix excludes the row: After, Attributed to, Workshop of, Style of, and similar.
  • The basis must be an artwork (drawing, print, painting, photograph, sculpture). Books and periodicals are not used as a basis.
  • The entity must be a human or an organisation.
  • The entity must have an artistic occupation in occupation (P106). A museum catalogue can record a poet or a monarch in an artist role, and nothing in the museum's own data reveals it; only the occupation already here does.
  • The name in the museum's record must agree with a label or alias here. This is what catches an identifier the museum attached to the wrong person, which no role or prefix check would see.
  • The statement is skipped when it already exists.
  • Every page is re-read live before the edit and again afterwards; if the re-read does not confirm the statement together with its reference, the whole run stops rather than continuing.

Pace

[edit]

Semi-automated through Special:BotPasswords, roughly one edit per 12 seconds, maxlag respected, no bot flag. If the volume grows, a request for permission will be filed first.

What comes next

[edit]

I have asked the community about modelling exhibition participation from museum open data at Project chat, and nothing at that scale will be loaded before that discussion settles.

If this model holds up, I intend to apply the same rules to other CC0 collections, particularly outside Europe and North America, where the gaps are widest. Nothing that is not CC0, and nothing where the matching key was not assigned by the institution itself. Labels and names: nothing at all.

Objections are welcome on my talk page. I will stop on request.
