What value should be used for the whole thing
[edit]What applies to part (P518) value should be used for a botanical drawing of the whole plant? Vicarage (talk) 14:29, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- Possibly a scientific illustration (P13162) main claim is more appropriate for that case? Infrastruktur (talk) 14:42, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with Infrastruktur there. Though, eventually, we should organize document the modelling in further detail TiagoLubiana🌴T🦋C🐬 14:10, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Vicarage, Infrastruktur, TiagoLubiana: I've just found this property. Could you please help in Wikidata talk:WikiProject Taxonomy/Tutorial#Image qualifiers? Thanks! Paucabot (talk) 16:58, 17 November 2025 (UTC)

Qualifier
[edit]It seems the compulsory qualifier for this property is applies to part (P518). Would it be better sometimes to use depicts (P180) or depicted part (P5961)? Paucabot (talk) 07:03, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
- Also biological phase (P4774) and sex or gender (P21) could improve applies to part (P518). Paucabot (talk) 07:52, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Makes sense to me. With regards to P180 and P5961. Yes, an image always depicts something so maybe it is a more appropriate qualifier than "applies to part"? For consistency's sake I suggest we settle on one qualifier and not several. I would say not to use depicts P180 because this property is meant to refer to a part of a taxon and not the whole taxon. In the above discussion it was suggested P13162 might be a better choice for the whole taxon. But sure, if you want to, go ahead and replace P518 with P5961. Infrastruktur (talk) 13:24, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- We clearly would need more than one qualifier here if we have to stick to the right properties for every value. Examples:
- depicts (P180) = mating (Q228395), herbarium specimen (Q61726742), ventral (Q3429717)
- depicted part (P5961) = skull (Q13147), mushroom (Q83093), fruit (Q1364)
- sex or gender (P21) = female organism (Q43445), male organism (Q44148)
- biological phase (P4774) = nymph (Q258362), juvenile fish (Q2832888), breeding plumage (Q62230)
- An additional live example: Q1768690#P13696. Paucabot (talk) 14:28, 23 December 2025 (UTC)

- What I meant was that we shouldn't be using both P518 and P5961 at the same time. Using other qualifiers like P21 and P4774 looks good to me. I'm a little unsure about using a broad qualifier such as P180 because of its broad application. More specific qualifiers gives more structure to the data and makes it more useful. Infrastruktur (talk) 12:03, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- I agree. Do you think I can delete required qualifier constraint (Q21510856)? Paucabot (talk) 14:54, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Better change it from P518 to P5961. Claims should always have at least a qualifier that says which part the claim refers to. I don't think the constraint restricts what other qualifiers can be used. I just went ahead and did it. Infrastruktur (talk) 16:27, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- But, for example, if we have only a picture of the male organism (Q44148) and another one of female organism (Q43445), it won't have depicted part (P5961). Or if we have caterpillar (Q81825), it won't neither have depicted part (P5961) and I think these are things that fit perfectly to the philosophy of the property. It only happens that, when the property was proposed, nobody thought some aspects of the taxon would need different properties as qualifiers. Paucabot (talk) 16:38, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- I see. Well, let's see what the people on Wikiproject Taxonomy prefers. Infrastruktur (talk) 16:53, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- This is the query to see which are the most used qualifiers with this property and this one informs on the values of every item. Paucabot (talk) 08:16, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
