When an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Srinagar was caught in a hailstorm earlier this week, air traffic controllers in Pakistan denied its pilots permission to escape the bad weather by using Pakistani airspace. A request for permission to divert the aircraft towards the international border was also “not approved” by the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Friday (May 23, 2025).

Pakistan’s notice to airmen, closing its airspace for all Indian-owned and operated aircraft, remains in effect till midnight on May 23.
