After weeks of matchups, Spain capped off a dominant World Cup run by defeating Lionel Messi and Argentina, 1-0, in the final on Sunday.
That gave Spain its second World Cup title, and also completed a historic feat for Lamine Yamal.
The 19-year-old soccer phenom became the first player under 20 to win both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. Spain won the UEFA European Championship in 2024, defeating England 2-1.
In Sunday's World Cup Final, Spain held Lionel Messi and Argentina scoreless throughout the game thanks to their defensive intensity. They'd had similar performances throughout their tournament against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, as well as Kylian Mbappe and France.
Ferran Torres scored the World Cup Final's only goal, coming 106 minutes into the matchup. Yamal, who had 87 touches and two shots on goal, had several chances to score, including early in the game's first half and then again with a free kick right near the end of the second half.

He was unable to find the net, but didn't need to. For Yamal, it was his World Cup debut, and some may have felt it was an underwhelming performance. He scored just one goal throughout the entire event, a goal in the Group Stage against Saudi Arabia, leaving some wondering if he was overhyped.
Since beginning his international career with Spain in 2023, he's scored seven goals in 33 appearances. However, this is early in his emergence as a potential superstar after Messi, Ronaldo, and Mbappe.
At 19, he's just getting started and has much more time to have impressive performances in big events. In addition to playing internationally, Yamal is a star forward with La Liga's Barcelona.
Yamal and Barcelona will play on Aug. 23 against Elche. He'll compete in the UEFA Nations League with Spain in a rematch against England on Sept. 26 at Wembley Stadium.
