Strengthening education starts with strengthening the teaching profession. Yet, new UNESCO data reveal that in 2 out of 5 countries analysed, teachers earn less than professionals with comparable qualifications, making it harder to attract and retain talent in the profession. On #WorldTeachersDay, UNESCO is calling for renewed action to strengthen the symbolic, professional and material status of teachers. This call carries particular weight as we mark 60 years since the adoption of the International Labour Organization/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set out the conditions teachers need to be valued, supported and trusted as professionals. And the challenge remains significant. The world needs 50 million additional teachers to achieve universal pre-primary, primary and secondary education by 2030. With 58% of this demand driven by attrition, recruiting more teachers must go hand in hand with creating the conditions for them to stay. Elevating teacher status is not only a matter of supporting educators, but a prerequisite for building resilient education systems and achieving quality learning for all. I recently fell on a note saying: 'I make twice as much now playing video games than I was when teaching'. That's not just a note to take seriously, it shows how the world horrifyingly puts more importance in entertainment (fixed mindset) above development (growth mindset). That's why I believe we're still very much lagging behind and can't move onto having a 21t-century mindset - and the lagging economy will follow.
Well articulated
To every teacher who has inspired, challenged, encouraged, and believed in a child before the child believed in themselves, thank you. You are not just shaping students. You are shaping generations. Happy world Teachers day. #loveteachers

Strengthening the teaching profession is the cornerstone of sustainable education. UNESCO's data highlights an urgent global challenge: to build the future of education, we must first secure the well-being, recognition, and continuous support of our teachers."
Compensation for teachers are not measured by how much dedication, education, efforts, knowledge, perseverance, and time teachers apply to educate children to have successful future. Fact of the matter is; in this materialistic world those who bring financial benefits receive high return. May be, since teachers do not bring financial benefits are not compensated as much as people in other professions.
Pay gap data like this is exactly why I tell college seniors: teaching is a great entry-level job and a terrible career. The field's most impactful role is its entry-level position, and the salary schedule makes sure it stays that way — same raise whether you transform outcomes or coast. Good for now doesn't mean good forever.
The fact that 2 out of 5 countries underpay teachers compared to similarly qualified professionals is a alarming stat. Retaining talent requires more than appreciation.it demands policy reforms, competitive compensation, and better working conditions. Thank you UNESCO for highlighting this critical issue.
Strengthening education starts with teachers – we see this daily in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. At MARYPAT LOVE & CARE FOUNDATION, volunteer teachers are the heart of keeping 200 vulnerable children in school. Fair compensation and respect for teachers is not a cost, it is an investment in resilient education systems. Happy #WorldTeachersDay
