About us
The UN Dag Hammarskjöld Library provides research and information to support the work of United Nations Member States and UN staff. As an integral part of the UN Organization, the UN Library also aids in the dissemination of UN information to a wider public audience through online services. The UN Library's digitization programme serves two vital functions: it preserves fragile historical documents, and allows them to be accessed online by many users without damage to the original record. To improve discoverability, the UN Library catalogues and indexes millions of items that help form the Organization's institutional memory. This makes them accessible to the greater public by developing a variety of research tools including the UN Digital Library, Index to Proceedings, and the UN Documentation Research Guides.

❓ Have you wondered, how are countries elected to membership in United Nations bodies? While all UN Member States are part of the UN General Assembly, most other UN bodies are composed of smaller numbers. Elections are held regularly to fill seats. Some subsidiary bodies consist of individuals appointed in their personal capacity rather than as representatives of Member States. This #UNLibrary FAQ provides an overview with in-depth resources: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDGDnZbJ #UNGA

💡 A moment of #UNLibrary history. The planning of a Library at UN Headquarters began with the planning of the United Nations itself. In 1959, the Ford Foundation gave an award of $6.2 million to the United Nations toward the construction of a new Library building in New York to replace the Library’s inadequate space. Shortly after the death of Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld on 18 September 1961, the newly-completed building was named the Dag Hammarskjöld Library in honour of his commitment to the creation of a beautiful and modern space for the Library. Today, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library pays tribute to the legacy of our namesake through the support of the men and women working for peace at the United Nations. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gdccVNKm Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation
