Bundibugyo Ebola spreads the same way as other Ebola: through direct contact with body fluids, not the air. What's different is that there's no approved vaccine for it yet? Watch and stay informed. Toll-free: 719 or 1199. #EbolaKE

A child runs onto the road. Driving at 30 km/h? You stop in time. Driving at 50 km/h? You hit them. That's why we're calling for a 30 km/h speed limit near schools, markets, hospitals and homes. #FikaSalama

Today, the Kenya Red Cross Society launched its Migration and Displacement Strategy 2026 to 2030. Displacement is lasting longer, and Kenya is shifting from emergency aid toward long-term inclusion. Our response must evolve too. Over the next five years, this strategy will guide our work across four strategic areas: Empowerment, Inclusion, Protection and Advocacy. Developed with the support of the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs and the Red Cross Red Cross Red Crescent Global Migration Lab and made possible through funding from the Danish Red Cross in Kenya. We also thank the British Red Cross for supporting the capability assessment that informed this work.

Today, Kenya Red Cross, represented by Deputy Secretary General Safia Verjee, joined Governor Johnson Sakaja, National Government agencies and partners at Charter Hall for the joint El Niño Preparedness and Mitigation Meeting. Across the city, work is underway to clear drainage, secure riparian areas along the Nairobi, Ngong and Mathare rivers and prepare temporary holding sites where affected families can find safety and support. At Kenya Red Cross, we have planned for the worst so that families don't have to face it alone. Our water rescue teams, boats, emergency shelter, health services and clean water and sanitation support are ready to back the County's Response Teams, alongside drone and satellite imagery to help track flooding in real time.

Kenya Red Cross is proud to host the 2nd Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Research Carnival in Nairobi from 23rd-25th September, bringing together researchers, practitioners and National Societies from around the world. Under the theme "Reimagining Wellbeing: Indigenous Knowledge and Approaches and Protection of Humanitarian Workers," we are exploring how local knowledge and innovation can strengthen support for communities and those who serve them. "Caring for those who care for others is not a side project of the humanitarian mission, it is the mission."

As El Niño preparedness enters a critical phase, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja today led an inspection of ongoing drainage unblocking works in South C. Speaking to our team alongside Deputy Secretary General Safia Verjee, Governor Sakaja commended Kenya Red Cross for being on the frontline of disaster preparedness and response. We continue to work closely with county and national government to safeguard communities ahead of the rains.

Kenya Red Cross reposted this
I am currently in #AddisAbaba with IGAD to discuss regional #preparedness for #ElNino. According to forecasts from #KenyaMet, 80% of the country is predicted to receive above average rainfall during the Oct-Dec short rains season. It is encouraging to hear the conversations and see the plans that are ongoing ranging from #EarlyWarningSystems to #AnticipatoryAction Frameworks that will unlock financing to support with preparedness activities. All of this must translate into action, so that Kenya Red Cross #volunteers and #firstresponders can act quickly and safely to save communities from preventable losses. At the end of the day, that is where it matters the most. #ElNino #AnticipatoryAction #FirstResponders #Climate #EarlyWarning #EarlyAction
A phone rings. A volunteer picks up their kit before they finish their tea. This is the life of a Kenya Red Cross volunteer, always on standby, always ready to move. El Niño is here, the rains haven't fallen yet, but they are already prepositioned, trained and waiting. Meet the people behind the response.
