Departing lawmakers rank among highest-paying offices

Caught Our Eye Posted by Caleb Mynatt on Monday, October 05, 2026

Congressional staffers working for lawmakers on their way out of office are among the best paid on Capitol Hill.

The 85 departing members with enough payroll data to calculate a median staff salary have an average office median of $79,715, compared with LegiStorm's congressional median of $75,510. The group includes members who are retiring, were defeated or gave up their seats to run for Senate or another office. Although departing members account for just 16% of the 533 offices with salary data, they make up six of the 10 highest-paying offices, 12 of the top 25 and 19 of the top 50. Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas), who gave up his House seat for an unsuccessful Senate bid, ranks first with a median staff salary of $128,790.

Cornyn aide makes an explosive move

Caught Our Eye Posted by Sean McGlinn on Thursday, October 01, 2026

A defense policy aide to Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has left Capitol Hill for an explosives manufacturer.

Brett Bauman joined Critical Materials Group in September as government relations manager. The Texas-based company manufactures and imports explosive materials and modernizes production facilities to support domestic explosives production and allied defense readiness.

I have found LegiStorm essential for my job and quite surprising in its capabilities. For an arts presentation I needed to give on Capitol Hill, I was able to automatically download key arts staffers associated with all members of the Congressional Arts Caucus. I also able to find staff with "art" in their education backgrounds, so they got invited too. Definitely fun, and useful.

We have found LegiStorm to be the ultimate tool in communicating with congressional offices, either individually or with a group. We have been able to reach out with messages to all chiefs of staff and legislative directors, or staff dedicated to specific areas. We believe that this ability was instrumental in passing two key pieces of legislation which were imperative to our members.
