Madrid - The Spanish government and the Basque separatist group ETA have held their first direct talks since the guerrillas declared a ceasefire last September, the Prime Minister, Mr Jose Maria Aznar, said yesterday.
Mr Aznar's announcement followed a report in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that the two sides met three weeks ago outside Spain at a secret European location but made no progress toward ending three decades of separatist conflict.
