What is euthanasia?

Euthanasia is the intentional ending of a person’s life to relieve severe pain or suffering, typically in cases of severe or terminal illness. It may involve a direct action to cause death or allowing death to occur by withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, depending on the type and legal context. Euthanasia is closely associated with physician-assisted suicide (also called medical aid in dying, or MAID), with the primary distinction being who administers the lethal medication.
