The Great Chicago Fire, 155 Years Later
Live from New York
October 11 marks the 51st anniversary of the debut of Saturday Night Live (SNL). The variety show has aired for over a thousand Saturdays since, featuring 174 comedians in its rotating cast. Who’s racked up the most appearances?
Alec Baldwin holds the current hosting record at 17 episodes. He first joined the show in 1990 to promote his movie The Hunt for Red October. Baldwin has also appeared as a special guest in more than 50 episodes, most notably impersonating Pres. Donald Trump throughout his first term. Steve Martin trails just behind with 16 episodes hosted.
Most frequent musical guestFor the second episode of SNL, Paul Simon became the first celebrity to pull “double duty” as both host and musical guest (performing alongside Randy Newman, Phoebe Snow, and Art Garfunkel). In the five decades since, Simon has appeared three more times as “double duty” host and nine times as musical guest.
Longest cast member tenureKenan Thompson is the longest-serving SNL cast member, appearing in over 460 episodes across 23 seasons. Thompson joined the show in 2003 after getting his start on its family-friendly counterpart Nickelodeon’s All That. Darrell Hammond, SNL’s current announcer, holds second place, with 14 years as a cast member. However, with Thompson returning for his 24th season this year, his lead continues to grow.
