Software

Here is a list of some of my favorite software/packages.

  • gimp Superior open-source alternative to Adobe Photoshop, I think Photoshop is quite worse and lacks basic functionality GIMP has natively had for ages (namely working with floating-point image data).
    • darktable Superior open-source alternative to Adobe Lightroom for developing raw camera images, with features for more technical users (choice of debayering algorithms, working color spaces, floating-point image format export, etc.)
  • htop Like top but better.
  • openmpi Awesome library and tools for High-Performance Computing
    • hwloc OpenMPI Project's Portable Hardware Locality (hwloc), for probing hardware topology. I love lstopo.
  • stellarium Virtual planetarium software, useful for planning observations and predicting the position of objects in the night sky.
    • calcmysky Adds ShowMySky atmosphere model to Stellarium.
